He still has an impressive run in recent times. What's most important is whom he fights and when it happens. Agbeko, Darch, Y. Perez, Moreno. All in their prime or close to it. All great names to have on your resume. You can say you don't like Mares' style of fighting and I'd respect that. But to undermine his accomplishments like that shows a lack of understanding. So his stint at 122 was short-lived. Who cares? Are you going to judge him based on just 2 fights? It's not like he's calling himself the best 122 lb fighter to ever live. Moreno was a very big threat to Mares' undefeated record and a very difficult fight for anyone and everybody knows that. Let's wait and see what Mares does at 126 before we start judging him. There are some dangerous guys there who pose a threat to Mares. If Abner fights them he gets proper credit. If not then fire away at will.

Oh dude, I give him more than his dues. He's my P4P #11.

Agbeko, Yohnny, and Moreno are three of my favorite guys below LW of the past little bit.

I do think that his 122 pound resume totally sucks, and I can't ignore him being the dirtiest fighter in the world today. It changes the way his fights go in his favor, period... I wish fighters stayed at a weight long enough to call themselves an actual threat or player at the division let alone the champion.

Ok people, Mares is out of the equation now.
The only guys that's left are Rigo and Vic.
I'll start dissing on Nonito once he ends up fighting Vic.

I would've really hoped it was Mares for sure.
Thanks Bob. You're the man :conf

Mares has no business at 126, I believe so.

C'mon now, Moreno was the clear favorite being hailed the next Whitaker and even top 10 p4p by alot of people. The Moreno win is by far a much better win than anyone on Nonito's or Rigo's resume. Moreno looked sensational against Mares too bad for him so did Mares with his unrelenting pressure and perfect timing. You gotta be an elite fighter to beat someone like Moreno. Not exactly Nonito or Rigo rushing to face him either.

I'm unsure how well Mares does at featherweight. I would have liked to see him stay at 122 and face Terrazas and then try again to get Donaire. If no Donaire he could have faced Santa Cruz and thats a great fight.

I really like the idea of him and Russell at 126 but overall I'm skeptical he'll have the same success he's already had.

That's unfortunate. He should fight his mandatory and then try for ducknaire again
