^This pic always make me double take :admin Broner looks HUGE compared to all of them. (Alexander & Maidana look like Flyweights next to him)
actually if thats an olympic bar its 235(two plates and four quarters). and he didnt even hit his chest. ive never understood why some guys in the gym dont hit their chest other than to impress people by using more weights. anyone that works out knows that the bar has to touch chest and your but has to stay on the bench to be a clean press. broner horribly fails here. for a superior athlete that walks around at 150 235 is nothing to be impressed with. id assume that he wouldve been able to do 300 minimum. all these guys are freakishly strong and gifted.
The thing is, he don't need to bench in the first place, especially with bad form. That's just an injury waiting to happen. He should be doing pushups and one arm pushups. Majority of the guys in the gym that can press heavy weight can't even do one arm push ups.
If you use a very wide grip with your elbows more flared out (often referred to as a "bodybuilder" form) then you'll be lowering the bar to a higher point on your chest. This form puts a lot more stress on your rotator cuff as your upper arms dip below the level of your body. Therefore, the closer you are to using this form the more you need to be aware of shoulder issues and the more you should consider stopping with the bar shy of your chest. Note that this will also "stretch" the pectorals more, and based on your level of flexibility, a deeper ROM may cause excessive stretching of the pectoral muscles, increasing your risk of a pec tear. If you use a narrower grip, with your elbows tucked in well toward your body (often referred to as a "powerlifter" form) then you'll be lowering the bar to a lower point on your chest. This form is more kind to your shoulders and most people should have no issues touching their chest. Without debating the relative merits of either form, or which is more "correct", these are the primary factors you should be considering when determining ROM. Obviously, your own physiology, experience, relative strength of supporting muscle groups, etc. also determines the form and ROM you should be using. Aslong as its within an inch of the chest its fine.
confirms what I've always said, you don't need to lift weight to beat someone up. Weak, pathetic lift. I am lighter and stronger than him, but a fight between us would end like the Litzau fight with me out in the first. What an ass, can't believe he couldn't keep it straight. Hope he injures himself.
agreed, its easier to press with a wide grip than a close grip because the former puts more emphasis on the chest whereas the later puts more emphasis on the tricep. but you are entirely and unequivocally wrong about "one inch of the chest." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXp_9uAQ8zI bar has to hit chest with no "bridge" for it to be a clean press. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VEPwunXcRL4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ee2cWddxHdI and thats how they do nfl combine as well. everyone i know would not credit broner with a 235 press if he were successful at the lift and either would the olympic commitee or the nfl combine. in fact, we all know that he is nowhere near 235 and more like 185-200 if he had to execute the lift properly(bar hitting the chest with no bridge).
It is a completely failed lift, he really isn't very strong for his size, at least in the chest, but that doesn't matter in boxing.
**** up your shoulder? i dont see the guys at the nfl combines or the powerlifters trying to set world records complaining about ****ing up their shoulders. dont tell me your one of those guys in the gym that doesnt bench off the chest. if you are ill let you in on something. everyone that works out knows that the only reason that you are not touching chest is to use more weight than you can handle. now take off 30 or so pounds off the bar, put aside your ego and bench press properly.
For a competition/ 1 rep max it has to hit the chest yes but for a chest workout of 6-10 reps it can be be within 1 inch of the chest, Not everybody has the same length arms, lucky for me i have short arms so i can get away with a deep bench press and touching my chest with the bar, but other people i have trained with have longer arms so if they touch their chest then their elbows are gonna be way below their body and will put their shoulders under alot of stress.
1 rep max? the nfl combine is a wolrd-known competition in the sports world and the bar hitting the chest is stringently enforced. and as you can see in the linked videos every rep(49) touches chest. the only guys i know that dont hit chest in the gyms are the guys that are trying to impress everyone by putting more weight on the bar than their strength can handle. if you dont incorporate this bizarre technique just try and have the guy doing so drop the bar to his chest. just make sure you take off 30 or so pounds before doing so.
i can guarantee you that the next time you go to the gym and you touch the bar on your chest you will not be able to handle the weight that you are accostomed to using by not touching your chest. seems that the only nonsense is people that do so(not touch chest) simply to use more weight.
you can get pecs burning with push-ups, whats your point? what is the reason why you dont hit chest when you do bench press sets? perhaps im worng on my assumption that the only reason why someone doesnt hit chest is to use more weight as his strength would suggest otherwise.
