From what he says... he thinks that old method of punching Maximizes punch weight and power development as a direct result of the body mechanics. To me it almost guarantees a straight punch is delivered..... His veiwpoint is to train people for a street type confrontation, and not the ring.

I had never realised that punch style existed either till just lately.I also thought one would break a bone easier that "old way" but the writer says it lessens the damage done overall....Im dubious all the same but will keep an open mind till something convinces me one way or the other.

By the way i give my friend some respect for asking me to train his girl in this style,as he trained his son to fight in the ring about 10 years ago,and he accumulated a lot of KO's and was known locally as "Baby Tyson".Thanks for your talking this over with me buddy,i appreciate it.:good

punching with the thumb facing up, or what I call a verticle punch is good when your fighting someone thats in the peakaboo defensive stance, so you can get your fist between there and make contact with the face rather that running your standard punch and hitting the there gloves all the time. A verticle punch is good for a solarplex strike as well.

Both styles of punching can be benificial to the fighter. It adds to creating more of a technical fighter and have more flexability in striking at angles.

Makes good and perfect sense to me now Scott. I guess im so used to teaching the good old fashoined Twist/corkscrew motion with almost every every punch as a standard routine that i will now have to open up to other possibility's..... Nothing too radical to integrate the punch to fit the occasion, so will see how things go.Thanks for replying mate.:good

Just out of curiosity... does anyone know of any fighter (well known or otherwise) out there that uses the "vertical' punch method?
