I thought Martinez was aestethically pleasing to watch. Not perfect fundamentals, but very well coordinated and fluid. Same goes for Ali and (but to a lesser degree imo) Nunn.

McCallum is the most aestetichally pleasing fighter I've seen. So extremely smooth and well coordinated but also so well schooled. Benitez and Napoles are others that combined almost perfect fundamentals with a fantastic smoothness. Sanchez, SRR and SRL should also be mentioned here. And Whitaker. Oh, and Kalambay of course. And Toney.

Jones was fantastically well coordinated, but lacking in fundamentals. His movements were a joy to watch, though. Hopkins had better fundamentals all in all, but not that natural coordination and balance. He was alright when young(er), but turned into pretty ugly, but very effective, spoiler in his late 30's/early 40's.

How would you guys describe defensive geniuses like Benitez and Locche...aesthetic or not?

:good I'm starting to really think that Charles is my favorite fighter of all-time. I think that I like him even more than Frazier and Robinson.

Good post. I was going to mention McCallum too, but he did have his "ugly" moments, especially later in his career. But who doesn't have those moments late in their career?

Yes. I'd add Wright as well. What about him?

His punching form went quite downhill after Toney II, but I wouldn't call him ugly. The elegant footwork and head movement was there until the end.

Man, Roy was an artist. Unconventional but a brilliant improviser and his athleticism speaks for itself.

BTW, add Bernard Hopkins to my "ugly" list.

Yeah, that's true. I guess it's because technically sound fighters are usually more aesthetically pleasing.

Muhammad Ali and Roy Jones Jr. are a couple of exceptions.

More ugly fighters: Vito Antuofermo and Rocky Graziano.

I loved watching Albert Davila fight because he had such a beautiful boxing style. Others with "pleasing to the eye" boxing styles included Miguel Canto and Jose Napoles. Believe it or not, Bobby Chacon had a very nice boxing style early in his career before becoming a brawler.

Is there any ugly fighters with a superb defense? I always thought Frazier was very cool to watch.

Arthur Abraham has a tight ear muff defense with his arms held high. Not much gets through but it's not refined. Just puts up his thick arms like two pillars that don't move. When he decides to open up he throws wide ugly punches with abysmal technique and muscles them out. They are crunching bombs but not graceful.
