Ali said before FOTC, if he lost, he would crawl across the ring and tell Frazier that Joe's the Greatest.

Joe told Ali he didn't have to crawl after the fight was over.

Just another reason Joe doesn't hold Ali in very high regard.

I saw the fight "live" at closed circuit back in 1971.

The crowd waited for Ali to "crawl", but we never saw it happen.

Course not. He'd do anything to sell a fight whether or not it would break the back of the other man.

But something that would affect him?

It sure is nice to see that people in the Classic section don't hold Ali in the same regard as the idiotic general public. I also agree that Ali was a vile piece of ****. It is so obvious to anyone who wants to look at those inconvenient things called facts that Ali was a racist, self-centered, ignorant, hate-monger who happened to be able to fight exceedingly well. His word meant nothing to him. Which under normal circumstances, if your word means nothing, then you as a man mean nothing.

He wasn't the anti-christ but when he's held in as high a regard as Martin Luthor King or Ghandi I have to stop and scratch my ****ing head.

Ali switched allegiances (Religious ones even) in the 60's like most people do underwear. He was more interested in shooting himself into the public eye, being on the cusp of events, making a splash then much anything else.

Great self promotoer, but that's what irritates me... When people see him as being some massive peace avtivist as opposed to, basically, a Arum or King Lite.

That must have been one dumb crowd... to actually think it was possible for a man of Ali`s pride to crawl to anyone never mind an enemy.

There was more chance of Jesus storming into the ring wearing a big pink hat & shouting `I love sheep`

    :patsch

Ali only did the things that 95% of humans would do, we would all do what Ali did if it was in our capabilities.

Vile piece of **** is way too harsh to be calling the athlete of the century, c`mon, whats wrong with you silly ****ers ?

Bull****. I would never act like Ali, I'd rather die with honor than act like a dishonorable clown.

    Agreed.

In all seriousness, why would I listen to a poster called Allah's Child with Malcolm X in his avatar? Calling Gandhi as racist as Ali is a pretty wild statement. What, no neo-Nazi's here to defend Ali as well?

I'm not saying the man's a flat out fake but I feel up until the twilight years of his life he's preferred being a walking talking bill board over anything else. It was about him from the Olympics to the very last minute he was in the ring, and for years and years beyond.

And again, he mingled his talks of peace and racial equality with punching people into unreconizable messes for money and constant VERY personal **** talking throughout a 20 year boxing career.

The man did some good things but men like King have FAR less skeletons in their closet then Ali, who you can dig into newspapers reports and see taht the guy has had people claiming they have his illegitmate children since the early 80's/late 70's.

I think a common trend on these forums is for people to see a popular opinion from those who don't know much about boxing or its competitors and then oppose a usually incorrect idea so much that they take it to an opposite extreme. Muhammad Ali is probably the perfect example, the public has him exalted on the highest level so people on these forums make him sound like the worst man on the planet. The truth lies in between, he was a human being who did many great and terrible things. But I can say that making the claim that he has as many skeletons in his closet as Don King is just down right ridiculous.

You found two racist comments, and only against blacks. That hardly moves me. The entire world is racist against blacks with the exception of the West, and that only changed in the last 50-odd years. If he was some kind of Indian supremacist or something I might be more worried, but anyone who knows a thing or two about Africa can sympathize with Gandhi's impressions. Civilization will never touch Africa I'm afraid, that's not racist, it's just reality.

You can have a hardcore prejudice against all things sub-Saharan Africa and not be racist towards blacks, dude. The fact that sub-Saharan Africa is a codeword for cultural wilderness says it all, that land is not meant to be inhabited by us it would seem.
