What a great fight this was!

It had everything you want in a boxing match. Both men getting dropped and looking finished at times.

I honestly thought AJ was done when he gets dropped and stands up like Frankenstein getting out of bed

Klitschko class in defeat.

 

Awesome fight. Watched it on a stag do in Bournemouth. Great atmosphere. And yes I thought AJ was done at 1 point.

 

3 years ago......feels longer for some reason, maybe that's just me.

Wlad may have been past his best but a fact that often gets overlooked is that AJ had only had 18 fights by this point and that his best win was over an equally green Dillian Whyte. Fantastic win for AJ, entertaining fight and a great night for British boxing that the haters and cynics like to try and discredit.

 

I believe Hearn and AJ were looking at fighting Povetkin or charr next before this opportunity came up.

I ended up watching this one with some friends in a ropey old pub in Bristol, think I was the loudest one on the pub cheering on AJ

 

I watched this in a Riley’s sports bar in Wigan at the time and the place was packed to the brim cheering and singing.

Thought AJ was done after the knock down took him a while to recover and Klitschko didn’t manage to finish the job.

Seemed like a passing of the torch spectacle and perfectly setup for the British stoppage once he had him on the ropes.

 

Thought at the time that it was a cracking fight, but certainly a false new dawn, when The Humbled One was nearly pumped on his own turf by a 41 year old robot that had been switched off for 18 months.

I still believe if Klitschko went for it after dropping AJ he would have stopped him.

After AJ got off the floor it looked like Klitschko tried to calm everything down, pace himself, he stepped off, he tried to keep composed.

Which I sort of understand but in that position, at that moment, in that fight I still believe he would have been far better off really letting those hands go.

Also, Klitschko gave AJ rounds to recover, not just a couple of minutes, rounds, and it ultimately cost him.



AJ turned it all around and credit to him for that but Ruiz showed that once you have AJ hurt and press it, he starts to unravel and I bet Klitschko til this day (TIl THIS DAY ) regrets not really going for it.

 

Boxing doesn't get much better than that night. Had all the elements of a classic.

It put AJ over the top as a superstar, and it was one of those rare occasions where the loser gains respect in defeat.

While it's been a frustrating time in the division since then, we'll be looking back at that fight as a watershed moment in decades to come.

Boxing certainly got better that night in New York on 1 June 2019 - that is the real watershed moment when the Humble One became the Humbled One.

Then THE LEGEND known as THE GYPSY KING went to the USA and dethroned Deontay Wilder when Tony Dosh PPV was still cleaning out the Puddings aisle in Tescos.

50 years from now, this is what boxing fans, looking back at the footage during this period, will be more interested in.

The amazing Fury comeback from outside and inside the ring together with a little fatty bashing a bodybuilder all over New York.

 

Good fight, not sure it's a 'great' one though given there were a lot of uneventful rounds. How this won fight of the decade is ****ing baffling when it wasn't even a nailed on fight for that year alone.

Will never forgive Wlad for not going all in when he had AJ hurt. That said, AJ recovered very well and there's no knowing if Wlad wouldn't have 100 percent stopped him. Both showed balls, both put on a show. Always good value in a fight when both guys hit the deck at some stage. Both fighters came away with more respect than they started the night with, which is always nice I suppose.

 

Klitschko should've won, not a clue what he was doing after he knocked him down, he was absolutely there for the taking, was a bit bizzare
