this is one classic example of championship belts being taken easily. the effort seems not enough for the challenger to take the belt. there should be an advantage bunos points for the champions to make a better challenge at getting the belts.
Come on man. There are different styles of boxing, and good thing. How boring would it be after a while if guys just stood there and traded fight after fight. The contrasting styles and tactics is what makes the sport what it is.
Never understood this, should the champ automatically start a few rounds up? If a challenger wins more rounds he should win whether it be by 1 point or more.
No, you're missing the point. Let's take Danny Garcia. I would consider Garcia to be more of a boxer than puncher, but when the moment presents itself Garcia can land the power shot, as evidenced by him dropping Matthysse. Algieri showed no power whatsoever. That is why Provo basically ignored the shots being flicked in his face.
So he should be penalized cause he isnt blessed with punching power? That's stupid. Go watch street fights on youtube or something.
Who said anything about Algieri being penalized? On the contrary, he just shouldn't be rewarded for dancing and pitty patting. You guys who think a fighter sneezing in an opponent's face is landing a punch need to look to other avenues for entertainment. Maybe Dancing with the Stars is more your thing.
That's such an idiotic thing to say. If not for that first round where he got caught with a hook he would have clearly outboxed him. What does he have to do to win? Ruslan hits hard and has an iron chin, why should he have to destroy him to win? Maybe Ruslan should adjust and learn something. Like cutting off the ring, feinting, attacking the body more. If you want to see two guys look like they're in a Rocky movie maybe you should go on youtube and watch street fights or something.
I'm getting the point fine. You're saying only guys who have power should win fights. Because in order to hurt your opponent, you need at least some power. Fortunately for me, the sport is the sport. It doesn't dictate to a fighter how they need to win. It gives each guy the opportunity to do so using their own tools and implement their own gameplan. Garcia is a boxer-puncher. Provo is a puncher. Algieri is a boxer. No guy should be given an inherent advantage by saying the other should have to fight a certain way to win a fight. The contrast in styles is what MAKES fights. A guy like Provo may put Garcia in full flight too, who knows? And if so, is he suddenly not a good fighter? Or not worthy of winning? I'm not even saying I thought Algieri won the fight. But he certainly made it into an exciting fight, which wouldn't have been the case had he stood there and traded. He wouldn't have made it through round 1.
Not because he thought Algeiri was beating him , because it was close on the cards and he wanted Ruslan to close strongly .
No, you are not getting the point. I am not saying only guys with power should win fights. As I have said many times before, Jimmy Young was an exciting fighter to watch. Young didn't have power but he was an incredible counter puncher. He took on guys who were bigger, stronger and more powerful but he would pick them apart. But when Young scored the guy felt it. It wasn't just a Howard Davis love tap. It was a punch. You can't give rounds IN THE PROS to guys who are scoring 3-1 when his shots are taps and the one shot from the other guy is a shot. Doesn't work that way in the pros. Why don't you watch the amateur tournaments if that is what floats your boat? What enjoyment does anyone get watching a guy run around the ring, flicking a jab with nothing on it? Who would you rather have been after the fight (forget about the awful decision) Ruslan or Algieri? If guys like you think it is just a matter of total punches landed, rather than the quality of the punches landed, all your guy would have to do is just touch the guy more times per round. I mean what exactly qualifies as a bona fide punch then. What if a guy gets nailed at the beginning of a round and is wobbly the whole round but manages to evade all other punches because the opponent is swinging wildly? And the guy who got nailed manages to land 6 or 7 light taps? Does that mean your love tap guy wins the round even though he is on unsteady legs the whole round?
I wouldn't really say all Algieri puncheds where taps, some of those jabs would send Provodnikovs head back and had enough power to stop Provodonikov simply walking him down and beating him up round after round.
Algieri took a beating in that fight. Provodnikov, who normally cuts easily, was unscathed. Provodnikov wasn't nailed once in the fight. The doctors at the end of every round were in Algieri's corner checking to see if he could continue. Just a disgraceful decision for a pro bout. The champion got no close rounds from the two hometown judges. None.
