Ali destroys the giant 1970

I think I read the Holmes vs Ali in Ali His Life & Times. Was that sparring session just before the Foreman fight in Zaire?

 

It should have been shortly after, since he refers to Ali as the champion. Holmes left in 1975, so it leaves a pretty small window.

Tyson also had some pretty good sparring partners in Page and McCall.

 

And Frazier had Norton and Young as sparring partners.

Absolutely nothing about these quotes.sounds like Ali's voice. He didn't speak in sentences like this.

"I had taken his measure?"

"I had his movement so catalogued and timed that I knew the meaning of the slight twitch that would involuntary appear in his throat when he was about to unleash a bomb. Then I would cut over his blow."

Really? Those are supposed to be quotes from Ali? (Christ.)

And nothing about it sounds like Bundini's voice. And nothing about it describes Jeff Merritt or his career to that point.

It's total fabrication.

Merritt was no Foreman.

 

They are quotes from a book. Ali would of told the story to a ghost writer who would write is so it is more readable in the book. That is why it reads the way it does. Ali says this did happen, did Ali fabricate the story, possibly.

 

I understand. That drives me nuts.

I have a copy of Joe Frazier's book "Smokin' Joe" and the writer pulls that crap, too. It's supposed to be Joe Frazier talking, and it has quotes, supposedly from Frazier that go:

"That led to the circumstances of April, 28, 1967, in Houston, Texas. There, a little more than a month after beating Folley, Clay declined to take the step forward that would've made him a soldier."

Joe Frazier said that? Really?

The only word I can hear Frazier actually uttering in that quote is the word "Clay."

We know what these guys sound like. I wish they'd just write what they say. If they rewrite their quotes, they aren't quotes anymore.

They probably are, they just aren't easily searchable. That AP Archive is a good resource. But man they are terrible at labeling fights. That Merritt-Clark fight was labeled NEWS ITEM. Similarly, that Merritt-Stander fight didn't even have Merritt and Stander's names included.

 

Yeah these are really hard to find.
What I meant though, was even if we catalogued all the AP fights, they still don't compare to modern catalogues where we can watch journeymens entire careers.

I have the same book. I have the hard back edition, the back sleeve shows a smiling Joe giving the old "up yours" jesture with his fist. You wonder who's idea that was?
