I think Ali just had one of those styles that judges love. He threw quick flurries, limited many opponents to body punching and inside fighting while he himself head hunted. Hell Paulie Ayala got as many 'gift' decisions as Ali. Was he the face of boxing?
It's a good point. Sharp, clean head connects just score more points, in general, and a guy like Ali could look like he was working harder than he was. A couple big flurries in a round can give the impression of activity, even if you are mostly jabbing the rest of it. Sometimes it really did work offensively, and wasn't just for shoe, ie, FOTC. Frazier one, but Ali beat the tar out of him in the process. In the rematch, Ali clutched like an octopus, but clearly outlanded Frazier and had him beat in the flashy combos department. It's almost like a magic show. It's how DLH beat Sturm. When he did let his hands go, he let them go. Complete con job on the men ringside, as barely anything landed, but that was way easier to see on a screen then ringside(I actually had it a draw when I watched it live from the third row _
