As I said,in an earlier post on this thread,Ezzard Charles had to put up with the same thing. He got over it,and so should Larry.

You're right, Larry should too. I just feel it's unfair of people to go around saying what a jerk Larry is and ignore all of the good he does for people, and the way they tend to always gravitate towards the negative comments he makes.

He only said Ali was a bit overrated, and couldn't punch hard like Frazier could.
No need for all these elaborate psychological criticisms and accusations about him being bitter and twisted.

Im really not too sure where to stand on this.

Ive seen Larry being a right negative ***** towards Ali and having a bag of potatoes on his shoulder nevermind a chip, and other times he has been really complimentary and couldnt be nicer.

Its taken me a while to 'get' Holmes (for lack of a better word) and i truly think hes maybe a bit misunderstood. I dont think hes a guy who expresses himself well (unless your trevor berbick). I liked the documentary i seen recently on the Holmes/Ali fight and thought he came across as a nice guy. 2 yrs ago i wouldnt have dreamed of saying that.

That's because he is a nice guy. As I said earlier, if he wasn't, he would be friends with so many other fighters and wouldn't have given Joe Frazier financial aid and wouldn't have given so much money to charity.

Yeah but he's basing it on sparring sessions and the 81' meeting.

Holmes never seen a prime Ali in his life.

That's right. Ali would put the beatdown on Holmes.

Anyway, he was probably paid to say that for the documentary

Agreed. Was just trying to think out of the box.

I believe Larry's comment was that Ali is overrated "as a fighter".

Some may underestimate Ali as a fighter I think simply because he lacked a devastating heavyweight punch. So, they conclude, how can he be the baddest of the big boys?

As I mention in my self-rebuttal, the reasons are myriad...and solid.

    Thanks.

I am convinced Larry Holmes is a great guy.

His many good, positive, smart actions as an individual --though not always his public statements-- are proof enough for me, and I value Bill1234's input very much as well.

Larry is just a guy who calls it like he sees it and doesn't sugarcoat it.

But I don't think he has ever "pissed" on Ali. He's just said Ali is overrated, though without using the offensive language or displaying the attitude he has reserved for his other pet peeves.

I know he likes Ali and is grateful to him, but that doesn't mean he's gonna worship him. Nor should he.

He is entitled to his opinion and to state it.

I just disagree with him on this score.

Well, I've been around him over 100 times in the gym, and he was never anything but a friendly person who just liked to have fun. He does have a pretty bad temper though, and he does not sugar coat anything. He says things exactly how he sees them and he doesn't care who he is talking to. The press have a way of pissing him off, which leads him into the bitter statements that become emphasized in places like here. The press rarely talks of his charity work and how much he has helped the city of Easton.

Larry's always been a 'good guy',,,,,,

He does good work for his community,,,,,,,without the fan-fare like some people.

    Interesting .
Ali is overrated indeed but so is Holmes himself. I rank Ali higher than Holmes.
