The argument who was th best will always rage but Ali's record is what really elevates him. He proved it by beating many other greats. I'm still of the opinion that Frazier beats him prime for prime. Frazier wasn't as great but he's the perfect fighter to beat Ali: a swarmer with a great left hook and bags of stamina. Ali would lose to some greats just because of styles but he'd win more than anyone else.
What makes Ali great is the fact that nobody goes into the ring against him as a big favourite. The guy overcame virtually every style during his career. Who else has a resume that has wins against anything like the quality of Liston, Foreman, Frazier, Norton, Patterson, Quarry, Shavers, Lyle, Williams, Folley, Bugner, Foster. Holmes, Louis, Johnson, Marciano, Dempsey, Lewis, Tyson all have great records but against nothing like the quality of Ali's victims. Holyfield comes close in that he managed to give everyone in his era a decent fight but he came up short against Lewis and Bowe.
Holyfield beat Bowe, Nov 1993. But did come off second best overall (trilogy). Douglas, Bowe, Moorer, and Tyson x2. Those were his signature wins. Foreman and Holmes, although past their "sell by date", out-weighed him by a considerable amount. More so Foreman.
I knock Homes off the "Great" record bit unless you start claiming Cooney and David Bey all time greats. Relly only Norton perhaps was worth anything. Shavers known for his loses, and a green and never made it Cooney.
I don't think he had. I think Norton might have given Louis some trouble. People underestimate Norton and say he was only good against Ali. But he also was probably the only one who could claim to come withing a whisker from beating Larry Holmes in his prime. So he gave the two most skilled heavyweights of that era a lot of trouble. That's really impressive. True, he wasn't good at all against the big punchers, but even if Louis hit hard I certainly wouldn't compare his punching power with that of Shavers and Foreman. Norton thrived against skillful boxers that couldn't easily overpower him, and I would probably put Louis in this bracket as well.
You seem to have little idea of Louis' power. It's hideous with either hand any punch. Futch himself said Norton froze vs punchers and believe you me Louis is a puncher. Ring named him greatest P4P puncher of all time!
