Liston was really falling in with that great jab of his, everything behind it. There did not need to be much on Ali's punch to put him over. Ali has leaned back to avoid the jab then his body has come back in like a pendulum with a light whipping punch behind it and that punch is dead on target coming from Sonny's blind side. The angle is perfect. The impact of the counter is perfect. Sonny's head definitely turns enough to provoke that fall from that position.

Ali initially stood over his fallen opponent, gesturing and yelling at him, "Get up and fight, sucker!" The moment was captured by ringside photographer Neil Leifer in what became one of the most iconic images in sport, chosen as the cover of the Sports Illustrated special issue, "The Century's Greatest Sports Photos." Ali then began prancing around the ring with his arms raised in victory.

I don't think there is much honour in gloating. I'm a little disappointed, because Mcvey is a good contributor to this site.

What did Mcvey do to get booted by the way?

Does that mean he's permanently banned?

He will be livid about this.

Although many far away from the ring felt something fishy went on those at ringside who saw the punch land felt very differently. This was nicely documented by SI. This was a legit ko.

    My little on this.
However or Whatever put Sonny down, i have NEVER seen a knocked down boxer behave like that whilst on the canvass.
He turned over more times than a wife trying to avoid her husband in bed.
Anyone who has fought a significant number of fights in their younger days, or at least watched same, knows that movements when put down are not as Listons were. He was feigning the actions of an injured fighter and in my view he did a lousy job of it.
I have no idea as to why he did it, but i'm sure he did. You Cannot change first reactions and Ali was screaming at Sonny to get up. He knew.
Why would he do that ?
I rest my case your honour.

Liston's legs appear to spasm as he lay on his back.

Liston as the crowd gathered in the ring after the ko walks toward center ring and staggers to his left.

In his dressing room after the fight Liston asked his trainer for smelling salts. His trainer stated Liston never before asked for smelling salts.

Ali stopped and knocked down other opponents with like blows.

Many at ringside did not see anything aside from a clean ko blow. SI article documented this nicely.
