No the wins were not overrated, Liston was the favourite in the first fight and was seen as invincible. Ali took him to.school. The rematch was controversial though.
its the same stupid argument over and over again. This guy weighs 240 so he is better than the guy who weighs 220 :-( Its like people never even watched the Haye vs Valuev fight where a CW beat one of the largest heavyweights of all time and made the iron chinned Valuev do the chicken dance. Of course Listons power could never compete. Just like there is no way guys like Paciqauo and Michael Moorer could move up in weight and knock people out
beware of a poster called Conoveli who is an eastern European posing as an irish gypsy. hes one of those "Ali would be a cw today". so to further legitimize his bs, he created a thread on British forum claiming that Haye was never a cw and was a heavyweight all along. because Haye a former cw was one of the top heavyweights and that does t suit peoples agenda when claiming greats of the past would be cw today.
It's a very good win for Ali. Liston was a great fighter and hall of famer. Why are people bringing size into this? A fighters greatness is not defined by size and Liston out weighted Ali anyway. Yes many past heavies are smaller than today's super heavies but a fighters greatness is not based on size but the quality of his resume and legacy. I find it truly myopic when people focus so much on size. If greatness was based on size alone David Haye has the greatest win in boxing history with his win over Valeuv. As for Liston against today's heavies. He'd beat everyone not named Wlad or Vitali. He had a huge reach, bigger than Wlad's and Vitali's. He was a huge puncher and a very strong man. He would batter Arreola is a one sided KO.
if size was the issue then the ATGgreat list would read - 1. Sugar Valuev 2. Butterbean 3. Primo Carnera. LOL ali would beat them on the same night.
Liston was a mean ******* I think you underrate him though in any thread about Liston it suppose there must be a reference to the mob:yep I can't believe the amount of fools that think Liston wouldn't a big puncher these says . All the **** as well about fighters being bigger so better compared to past fighters is total bull****
:good Great post,100% agree. Also i personally think modern HW's are actually pretty good.when most fighters are over 230pounds it's hard to look "great" no matter how we spin it.if you are giant, your techniques look rude.and also you have to fight to your strenghts. Past HW's have been smaller, ecpesially before the Ali era.somebody like Kovalev is close to past HW's.and insert Kovalev skillset to HW and he looks like killer. Fast, great technique, amazing footwork and great stamina etc.. But there are obvious reasons why Kovalev will not go to HW today. Hope you understand my post correctly, finnish boxing fan here.
chris is a fat blob who can hit stationary objects hard. no. liston has a choice of ways to beat arreola, chris is that middling, he can outpoint him, tko him, or outbox him for a points win.
Two of this eras best heavyweights were former cruiserweights, funny how people forget to mention that.
Did you ever hear what Liston said after Ali-Liston 1 ?? " They told me that boy couldn't punch They Lied "
