The fact it's become thee bout to reference when speaking of action-packed fights is a little tiresome, though when you consider how tentative most of today's high stakes fights are, especially in the early goings, you can see why its explosive opening is immortalised.
In this age of "safety first" boxing where there is more posing...holding and clinching then there is actual fighting....yeah,...it was a great fight. More action in 3 rounds then you see in 12 rounds of.."ahem"...boxing today.
You mean, like Matthysse-Provodnikov? Or Glowacki-Huck? Or Vargas Miura? Do you old coots even watch the sport any longer?
It makes me think Tommy Hearns was an idiot. That and the Leonard fight. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
well I think Tommy was used to having his opponents get stunned when he hammered them,,, that's if you were referring to him as a idiot for going after Hagler as he did?
I agree with Seamus. It was an exciting fight, but it was pretty much all Hagler, besides one big shot in the first round from Hearns.
so, seamus is comparing fighters like matthyse-provodnikov-huck etc. to hagler and hearns. the whole point with hagler-hearns is that they were two highly skilled boxers that went for blood. i don't care to watch gatti-ward again.. hagler-hearns i'll watch again.
Hearns spent 95% of that fight pedaling around on fawn legs trying to find a base to launch a hook or right hand. I agree that watching skilless guys go hammer and tong gets old but Hearns and Hagler weren't exactly rewriting the Ray Robinson playbook there. And again, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that Hagler was going to win after the first minute. I am not saying it is a sh*te fight, just that it's overrated when it is constantly referred to being the ultimate benchmark for great boxing.
I thought the 1st round was one of the best ever, after that Hearns was pretty much done, so yeah I would say it is a little overrated.
First round is incredible. Second round featured Hearns attempting to box and having success early while Hagler continued to storm forward and fire away until he broke through in the last minute. And the fact that Hagler bled all over the place in the last round added to the drama of the fight, even though Marvin was well in control by that point. I actually think the second and third rounds are kind of underrated, due to the cut and Hearns having some good moments. That said, there are a number better and more consistently competitive FOTY's.
First round was very competitive. Hagler was hurt early then came back so great give and take which great fights are made of. Then Hagler was badly cut but then came back again and in short order for a spectacular ko. It was a great fight.
Overrated in the sense that it wasn't an all time great fight. For that, there needs to be more back and forth for a sustained period of time. That said, it's not overrated at all in the sense that, every time it's on, I watch it... and sometimes seek it out at random times throughout the year. For a short sweet viscous fight it's great
