It's just boring. I cannot stand watching it. Amateur boxing must be the only sport where you are in direct opposition to somebody, but you aren't trying to beat them - you beat the judges. The IOC should strip it of Olympic status, because it is the complete opposite of what competitive sport should be, IMO.
I agreee some of the judging has a lot to be said for... but Amateur boxing boring...... not a chance...:yep
Someone mentioned the money being pumped into boxing over the last 18 months, but to be fair to the set up, it's been longer than that. Money and a genuine interst in the sport at amateur level has seen it rise in popularity. It gets as much newspaper coverage as the pro's and is almost as widely screened (possibly even more widely screened in the near future given Setanta's collapse). Things do look golden for ams at the moment. Cant agree with BB that it's boring, but the scoring system certainly doesnt lend itself to the pro's. I dont know what the obsession is with computer scoring systems. Let the judges watch a fight, round by round and score it properly rather than this academic system of shots landed! Other than that gripe, the ams is in good shape.
Personally, I enjoy it. Try going to a show mate (if you havent already). Atmosphere is generally awesome! Cheap too!
