The pair boxed each other 5 times (I think) before they met at Beijing 2008, with Sutherland winning 4 and Degale just 1. Degale outboxed Sutherland in the semi final of the games which I suppose was their most important encounter. Darren Sutherland had all the attributes to become an exceptional professional boxer, such a tragedy what happened to him, he should always be remembered. On amateurs who beat amateurs, one of the most famous ever must be when the great Sugar Ray Robinson defeated the defensive wizard Wille Pep. Two men who are in many top 10 p4p lists of all time.
It is very well known they boxed as amateurs in the bantamweight divison in 1938 possibly 1939. Rumours vary saying Pep was outweighed by 18lbs or 25lbs, other reports say they were within 1lb of each other and Robinson won comfortably. Reports even say Robinson and his manager were arrested after the contest as it was believed he was a professional boxer, being the only reason he could defeat Pep. The fight took place in the New York Golden Gloves Championships as well apparently. Suppose we will never know the true facts.
Yeah that it what you are saying, yet other sources say different. You might be right, there are varying views over what happened. Who is to say who is right.
Just type it into google, you will find plenty information. It says in Robinsons biography 'pound for pound' that it is an amateur fight.
Im not talking ****, I do this in my phone, not a computer so I cant send the links. What I said earlier is that many people have different versions on what happened. I am not saying you are wrong or right. However Willie Pep probably would say Robinson outweighed him by 25lbs if he was beat by him. Who is to say Pep is not telling the truth. I am saying they are many differing accounts to what happened and we may never know the real answer.
That is cool mate, I was cut up at the time when it happened, big shock when I found out like everyone else.
He won bantamweight titles in 1938, featherweight titles in 1939 and lightweight titles in 1940 before turning pro.
