I'm not going to be making threads over and over again for small topics such as Press Conference's etc etc, so I'm sticking it all in this one.

Khan McCloskey; Maybe Not Such A Bad Idea After All..

By Gav Bridges: So, it seems, we are now set fair for the next bout facing ‘he who would be King’, Amir Khan. After much pontificating, shuffling and column inches, it seems reigning European champion Paul McCloskey will be getting his chance, and money befitting the match, on 16th April.

Many forums have been pounded over the past few weeks, the list of potential opponents ranging far and wide over more than a few generations and weight classes. At one point I got the impression the spirit of Georges Carpentier was to be summoned from the other side, such was the intensity of speculation and failed negotiation.

Now though, the prize has been given to McCloskey, a convenient low-key bout to smoothly pave the way to the linear bout aganst Bradley. A nice, unassuming contest which, save the participation of Khan, would merrily slip beneath the radar. Or so many think...

Let’s have a look at the bout. Now sure, McCloskey may not have stellar names on his record, or fighters who immediately trip off the tongue of supporters ‘Over The Pond’, yet the men he has defeated, and defeated comfortably, are the best a resurgent European boxing scene has to offer. From watching McCloskey the casual fan wouldn’t see anything that would immediately stand out, but what he does he does well, in a rounded package. Decent lateral movement, good reactions and vastly under-rated defence pave the way for a smooth southpaw jab to open the avenue to some fluid and accurate combinations, all blended with that obdurate fighting spirit than runs through the DNA of all Irish fighters.

Next, the night of the bout itself. The Manchester Evening News (MEN) Arena looks like the venue of choice. A state-of-the-art facility, which will be full to the gills with 20,000 raucous, encouraging voices from both sides of the Irish Sea. Any fan of the sport who hasn’t experienced what a huge Irish contingent brings to a live event are missing out on one of life’s great joys! Win, lose or draw they will sing and cheer and greet the opposition as their brothers, the raw unbridled enthusiasm over the years has willed more than one fighter from the canvas and driven them on to achievements beyond nature’s will.

So, we have the PPV left to deal with. Many are saying this match will have no impact in the States, no doubt these are the same people who have just left the cinema’s wowwing at the performances of Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale in the biopic of ‘Irish’ Mickey Ward. Make no mistake, this bout couldn’t be better timed. An Irish hero, with no chance, taking on the champ, HBO will milk this angle of the fight to rouse the massive Irish communities dotted all along the Esatern seaboard, and suddenly the figures may not be looking too shabby...

So now, with a few extra ingredients in the melting pot, suddenly there is a touch more intrigue and one hell of a lot more reason why this bout isn’t the needless foray some are portraying it as. For what it’s worth, I believe Khan will still have too much for McCloskey, however I think we will have another member of the burgeoning group that is rapidly making 140lb such an attraction to casual fans and die-hards alike. Roll on April 16th, and somebody save me a seat and a glass of Liffey Water!!

“It's great news for Paul that the deal is signed but it's bad for Khan. Paul has the style to beat him without a doubt — he's going to baffle Khan with his skill and his moves," Breen told the Belfast Telegraph.

“I get the impression that Khan's camp are taking Paul lightly and if they are underestimating Paul then that's just great. It's going to be a great fight. Paul and I will be sitting down this week to make our plans. We have 10 weeks to get ready which is perfect for us. It's the fight we have been calling for and now the chance is here so it has to be grabbed."

"For this fight no stone will be left unturned, money will have to be spent on good sparring and a training camp second to none to make sure that Paul is ready to go and win," Breen said.

So what is the latest on Khan's strength and conditioning coach? I heard on one of the boxing radio shows that Ariza was on a % fee and obviously that fee got bigger as Khan's income expanded.

Plus, Ariza claims that members of team Khan stole the contract he had with Khan from his bag from in a room? Serious allegations these, but what is the reaction from Team Khan to all of this?

From what Ariza is saying, Team Khan sound like a bunch of cheapskates. This is not ideal preparations and until this is resolved it is bound to come up at subsequent pressers in the lead up to the fight.

Paul can win this if he can take Khans best shots as I feel he will be tagged at some point with his style

"I think Shah is letting his teeth get away from him when he's talking about the business side of things, as far as what Freddie and I do or how the deal was set up with me and Amir. Freddie doesn't pay me. That's not his responsibility. I have the same deal with Amir as I do with Manny [Pacquiao], [Julio Cesar] Chavez Jr. and Vanes [Martirosyan]," during an interview with Suge Green of OnTheGrind Boxing Radio.

"They have a habit of putting things off. Finally it was the week of the Maidana fight and I still didn't have a signed contract, so I had to have Amir sign it that week. As I said, they then broke into my hotel room and stole not only that contract, but my contract with Manny, Chavez Jr. and who knows what else. Then on Monday, Shah calls Freddie and says that I made Amir sign a contract two hours before the fight. I don't know if he just likes lying or that comes from what his past living was. Freddie knows that I would never do that."

"I think [manager] Asif [Vali] shoud stick to running the cab company and I think Shah should stick to hustling for fares and finding the long way to the airport and leave the boxing to the boxing guys. I think they ultimately hurt the fighter because everyone knows what I bring to the table."

Yes exactly what I was referring to. Surely Team Khan have to come out clear all this up, they look very bad here, getting accused of breaking into hotel rooms and stealing things!

Ariza says he has the same arrangement with Chavez, Manny et al. - which implies a % cut. I find that hard to believe in the case of Pacman, especially.

Although, for a strength and conditioning coach - a competitive flat fee would suffice.

Does this guy think this fight is PPV in the states? HBO milking this fight??
