when/if you're dehydrating to make weight then every extra pound you can carry makes a BIG difference, i've seen it with my club mates and asked many pros about it. but khans ability to take a punch is a combination of not dehydrating, working the neck/legs and finally learning to defend the punchhes, he rolls with the shots now and is able to get away quicker.
i remember back in 2005 or so someone posted a study on how dehydration leaves inadequate fluids in the brain and how it causes you to lose balance and feel lethargic, the guy who posted it did so to defend miguel cotto and everyone took the **** for defending a glass jawed fake, 2 years later cotto fought mosley and took his shots with no problem and the thread was bumped again but nobody replied!
I agree with all of that, but I do think sparring does help you cope with a shot better. Not physically, of course, but mentally. If you get hit in sparring, you realise that you have to take these shots and cover up. It takes out that inner grit and really makes you bite onto your gumshield. That's what I think anyway. I mean, the Mike Tyson comparison doesn't really work. Mike Tyson would just blow out any person in his day, but regular tough sparring that's in your weight class does help. As Amir and many others have said, he'll be a force at 147. He still cuts Muscle at 140. At 147, his legs will be thicker, his neck muscles, and he'll have more fluid to his brain, like you said.
Basically it works both ways, you need to take certain shots on the face and body (not the chin) and this will improve your ability to take them as your conditioning gets better, that is not to say you willingly take the shot but you need to take them from time to time. But of course their are many other ways to build your resistance. P.S to the people saying adding weight makes you take the shot better that is a myth, it only works in cases like Amir when and if you are weight draining yourself to make a certain weight.
thats what i said numbnuts, spud stick to talking about the illuminati son, you dont know **** about baaxing.
If you read this thread you'll know that Khan is not thinking like that. Seems like to me he's training just as hard as he was for the other fights.
This confusion about punch resistance usually comes about because people don't understand they are talking about two seperate things. There is punch resistance in terms of the body absorbing punches. Lots of things affect this, your weight, issues with weight draining, your balance. There is muscle work done to strengthen the body to improve this, abdominal strength etc The second is the KO mechanism in the lower skull.. There is nothing that can really be done about this. Your born with it.. and from there it can only get worse as your body attempts to protect you more. It isn't muscle, you can't train it. This is precisely the reason you will never get any professional trainers of note ever mentioning anything about "someone developing a chin". The only thing people can learn is how better to deal with it when they are in the situations they recognise as being in this zone of stress. You will however often get people saying "oh he moved up in weight and he suddenly gained a chin" or "he now has a chin because X fighter hit him much harder than Y who put him down".. This is completely irrelevant too because in reality its almost impossible to determine whether the actual stress on the KO mechanism was greater between two punches. Just because one looks like it's taken harder doesn't really mean it applied as much stress, as it all depends on the position of the skulls, the neck, the angle the punch hit and so on..
HELP, anyone who has been banned!!!! When do this lot restore full forum privileges? I committed the cardinal sin of criticizing the mods impartiality before Christmas and got banned. My ban has since been lifted (end December) but still cannot author any threads and they just will not answer any emails I send them. Predictably I probably get banned by Big Brother for writing this aswell........
are we doing avatar bets on this one? I'll take the plunge and go for McCloskey to win (against my better judgement)
Is khan carrying a leg injury ,doesnet seem to be pushing himself as he does in prev training camps with the running/ciurcuits etc in any of the pictures ...could he be carrying an injury ?
I get were your coming from but I think your using extreme examples of power. My point doesn't relate to getting KTFO by a prime Mike Tyson but getting hit severely hard and dealing with it and I think this particular debate started on the premise of "does sparring help with punch resistance". Neither of us can prove the issue conclusively, it obviously comes down to a matter of opinion but I would still argue the point that sparring helps you deal with punch resistance
