In the old days, guys were routinely screwed out of title shots for years due to the fact that there was only 1 title. I think it wasn't until the 40's or 50's until a guy regained the HW title after losing it. Guys had more losses because they had to fight so often. If you fight upwards of 100 or 200 fights, your bound to rack up the losses. Guys nowadays fight much less often. They have less opportunities to recover from a loss.

Its not picking opponents i have a problem with, its just the way a Hof career can be forged without having to ever fight another top contender, wether it be financially viable or not
