He is definitely gun-shy. Late in their fight he resorted to trying to butt Fury but only succeeded in injuring himself. He carries himself as a Champion should outside the ring and is always in shape, but he bores and infuriates me with his passivity and cynical holding and leaning.
Peter was #1 ranked at the time, and Wlad did not have to take the fight. There was a buzz about who would win. Wlad clearly beat Peter on the score cards, and hurt him late. In the fight Wlad landed 104 more punches. If not for Peter's foul punches behind the head, its a blow out on the score cards. He also gave Peter a re-match and knocked him out. Regarding Johnson he didn't face his best contenders at all while Champion, until he fought Willard in 1915 and was knocked out. When I say struggling, Jack Johnson was out boxed in a 6 round affair by O'brien according to primary sources. O'Brien was at best 176 pounds. He was also floored by another super middle in Ketchel. And later drew with a Joruneyman in Jim Battling Johnson. Could you imagine if that happened to Wlad in his prime today? You'd post it 24 x 7 and probably get ill from lack of sleep! Peter wasn't hype Dino. He was the most sought after super heavyweight of the 2000 games. As a pro he holds four victories over boxers who were ranked in the top ten at heavyweight in McCline, James Toney 2x ( likely on roads ), and Maskeav. Yes, he lost focus after both Klitschko's beat him and goy too heavy, but there is little doubt Wlad beat the best version of Sam Peter.
I didn't actually want to use this term, to describe Wlad but, his performance against Fury got me wondering. I mean, Wlad wasn't under any real threat, because Fury was doing very little - and that little he did do wasn't heavy. And yet, it wasn't until he had absolutely nothing to lose before he made any serious attempt to engage Fury. Some credit should go to Fury for being able to make things slightly awkward but, it all seemed a bit too tentative, on the part of Wlad, to me.
This more or less sums it up. One man's hero is another man's villain, I suppose. Although, with reference to a comment you have made in another post, he has handled himself impeccably outside of the ring.
So he bores you with holding and leaning? I wonder if there is another fighter or two that you are fond of that did the same Can you say double standard. The reason some of Wlad's fights are boring is his opponents don't want to get knocked out. They stay away, play defense and risk little. How is that his fault? For example, take David Haye who you felt would beat Wlad. He got hit with a solid punch in round five then opted out of the fight. Also, opponents don't have to fall into the trap of being held, they have two arms and fists to fight back if they choose. As far as finishing his opponents, Wlad's KO % is impressive and he's knocked out many ranked opponents.
A fair question. I'd have to check the monthly ratings. Here's what I came up with as the annual ratings are on line. Peter might have been #1 at the time, and moved down to #3 after the loss. Does anyone know for sure? Ring Magaizne 2006 annual ratings. Title Vacant Wladimir Klitschko Oleg Maskaev Samuel Peter James Toney Shannon Briggs Serguei Lyakhovich Lamon Brewster Nikolay Valuev Ruslan Chagaev John Ruiz Ring Magazine annual rankings 2007. Wladimir Klitschko Samuel Peter Oleg Maskaev Ruslan Chagaev Nikolay Valuev Sultan Ibragimov Serguei Lyakhovich Vladimir Virchis Tony Thompson Alexander Povetkin >>After Peter beat Maskaev he moved up only behind Wlad. So #2 here, but everyone knows Wlad was the champion, and Peter was the #1 contender.
Peter wasn't ring ranked, at the time of their first bout. Although, to the best of my Knowledge, he had moved to somewhere, within the Top-5 of each of the main Sanctioning Body's rankings, by then.
I agree, I'm not a Fury fan either, he has great movement for a big man, but lacks power and I'm not sold on his chin either.
The punches that did hit Wlad in the back of the head, were Wlad's fault. He was intent on tying up Peter's left hand after getting caught by the left hook so when Wlad tried to clinch he naturally steps into Peters left side. An overhand right that would have normally landed on the jaw or temple landed on the back of the head due to Wlad's positioning. That and he really got nailed by the left hook and was on wobbly legs already.
Jack Johnson bores me too, I'm a Dempsey fan .I just don't like lying. agenda driven, big*ts posting BS. Double standard? I posted your comment on Suzie Q saying Louis knocked out Elmer Ray in an exhibition. Here it is. "Louis only had a sparring session with Ray. My point is this. Walcott got the better of Louis in a sparring session, but lost in the ring. There's a huge difference, and Ray for sure was worthy of a title shot". How many times on this forum have you posted GunBoat Smith tko'd Johnson? You could disappear up your own a*se and it would be a favour to all of us if you did!
Wlad was responsible for the punches going around the back of his head by turning away from the blows, he has done this in several fights.
