yea Leonard was fast and ali was fast.....but its a relative thing...relative to other guys their respective weights...ali was much faster....some guys in leonards weight class where almost as fast as him..no one at heavy was anywhere near as fast as ali....so to say...well give leonard a 200 pound body...fine..but then you have to makeh im slower..just like if ali was 147 you would have to make him faster.
Still resorting to your filthy jibes,as "up ye ".Too bad my age precludes me from shutting that trap of yours... You have no respect for your elders, and fate will teach you that someday...You are a clASS act...
jack dempsey kicked the hell out of two 20 something punk muggers when he was in the 70's....i think you could still do it....
Did Ali "Manhandle" Liston in their first fight? I'm not sure what Angelo means when he points to Clay-Liston as an example of Clay's physical strength. If anything Clay was doing everything he could to AVOID getting involved in a test of strength with the more powerful Liston.
I agree with you. a heavyweight because of their weight cannot compete with a 147 pounder in dexterity, otherwise there would be many top ballet dancers, over 200 pounds..The law of diminishing returns. a heavyweight should be compared only with other heavyweights..b.b.
Dundee picks Ali as the strongest fighter he worked with; Ken Norton has said that Ali was much stronger than Holmes .... maybe it says something that Ali himself was very impressed by the strength of a 14-yr retired Marciano?
Since the subject's Angelo, thought you'd appreciate this incident. Thanks to him, gotta taste of the film noir cliche that Joe Louis must have experienced many times. As an amateur in the '50s, fought for Angelo's 5th St. Gym team that criss crossed Florida. The team had Kronk cache. Every backwater dreaded facing us. While I was warming up in the dressing one night, my opponent, a raw-boned cowboy covered in tats, approached, beggin' me ta take it easy on him...a wife 'n kids-- the whole nine yards. He didn't know me. He'd never seen me, but I was part of Angelo's team, so I must be a BEAST. You guessed it, the bell rang 'n he tried to take my head off. I stopped him. He was just a barroom bomb thrower.
"Manhandle" is of course an exagerration, but he did manage to control him in the clinches. Cooper also spoke about how strong Ali was in the clinches in their rematch. He said it was like being trapped in a vice.
To ESB Panel-In response to a question about angelo Dundees choice of Ali over as best all around boxer he trained, i gave ny opinion to our poster Bokaj, that I favored Ray Leonard, over Ali...My opinion to Bakaj. When from nowhere i get the above response from manbearpig as quoted above " Ali> Dempsey. UP YE.. This came out of nowhere... I ,an oldtimer in boxing but a novice on ESB, ask the panel how to respond to such a slander so unsolicited..? Is this panel for civil discussion or a free for all, where anything goes. Appreciate some insight...b.b. Thanks...
