" Kovalev won the fight against Ward clearly " " Mayweather runs in every fight " " Usyk would destroy Anthony Joshua " " Mike Tyson in his prime would destroy every heavyweight fighter who ever lived and is the best of all time " Those are some annoying things that usually casuals say.
2 Things: Calling Lara a fraud is ridiculous. He's a technically brilliant fighter. It would be nice if he increased his overall punch output, but there's nothing fraudulent about the guy whatsoever. He's been a highly avoided fighter for a very long time. This guy literally would take on anyone in and around his weightclass. Secondly, and not to derail your thread, but you must not have seen much footage of Willie Pep. The guy was the master at nicking rounds from his opponents, barely doing the minimum necessary to eke the round out. Willie prided himself on being extremely defensive oriented. Everyone obviously knows the story of him winning a round without throwing a punch (although he technically did throw a couple that looked like half feints.) To call someone a casual fan based off these rules is quite pretentious on your part. I personally would've loved to seen Rigo and Vasyl fight each other but recognize now they're several divisions apart. So the point is essentially moot now.
Exactly. Lara is a great fighter , i love to see him fight , his performance against Paul Williams where he was robbed ( really robbed , not a Kovalev-Ward or GGG-Jacobs robbery ) was masterclass. And the term " aggressive elements " in combination with Willie Pep is ridiculous.
I always think back to that performance he had with Williams, who at the time was one of the most avoided fighters in the sport (only Martinez seemed crazy enough to fight him regularly.) Lara had only around 13 or 14 pro fights at the time they met up and he obviously got screwed in that decision (I believe it was a MD.) I really don't think he stinks up the place like people mention. He definitely is a defensively-oriented fighter, but he has incredible counter punching ability, a solid jab and enough power to hurt his opposition. He's also been on the controversial end in his losses. The guy can walk around and make the claim that he's actually undefeated and no one has really beaten him (the Canelo fight was much closer obviously than his match with the Punisher, but many people think Lara did enough to win his fight with Alvarez.)
Getting tired of this whole "casual" put down nonsense on here. Some people have other interests besides boxing and can't spend 24/7 on here making meaningless post after meaningless post and that doesn't make them any less a fan
Absolutely right. Not every boxing fan knows every fighter or had seen every fight in the history of the sport from every fighter. The way the OP is talking , he seems to be a casual himself , who is pretending to be knowledgeable by saying Lara is a fraud and Willie Pep had aggressive elements , which is simply not true. In fact , Lara is more of an aggressive fighter than Willie Pep ever was.
I strongly disagree. Lara is a fraud from a historical standpoint and has squeaked through the cracks only because modern boxing doesn't push for boxers to engage as much. The emphasis were for boxers to 'outpoint by fighting' rather than 'outpoint by NOT fighting'. Pep leaned far further to the left and it grossly misrepresents his style and execution to just be considered in the same sphere as a Lara-esque, Mayweather147lb-esque boxer. How you've described Pep is rather accurate, but with your ambiguity, you're phrasing it as though it is in a Lara-esque manner. Absolutely and categorically not. Pep was a master ring general, a scared fraud like Lara proactively decides to retreat completely to reset at any attack from his opponent, unfortunately also when there's just a feint. The likes of Lara forgo ring generalship and aggression criteria. The way Lara ran during the Canelo fight who is a flat footed plodder who can't even cut off the ring to save his life, speaks volumes. It is pretentious, but it's the taste casual attitudes require to sober up. I have zero tolerance for casuals or semi-casuals. As for the claim that Lara calls out people around his weight classes, I guess this should suffice:
This Keith-Joshua is nothing short of a casual - it's the poster 'oKIN129'. Just because people may know who fighter x, y and z are and post on a boxing forum, it certainly does not mean they aren't 'casuals' in their knowledge and understanding of the sport.
'Floyd Mayweather is the greatest ever. 49-0. He beat 23 world champions. He's undefeated. He beat Pacquiao, De La Hoya, Mosley, Hatton and Cotto - this means he's definitely the greatest. He always found a way to win'
