I was surprised he said Jackson had the fastest hands, but it makes sense. I always said regardless of anything Jackson landed clean on guys when most guys never landed that clean.
Was also a little surprised to see Jackson as the faster in term of handspeed. But I guess the man knows what he is talking about since he faced both Jackson and Jone Jr. Meeting the latter at the end of his career tells a lot about Julian handspeed during Mike's prime.
Except the big four. Too bad. Would reallly be interesting to see him against Hearns and Hagler especially. But those weren't the fights the public called for, unfortunately.
I think it's very interesting that he had Toney as the overall best fighter and thinks that he improved all through their trilogy. Not surprising as such since Toney was in his early 20's for the first two fights, but it makes one wonder again what could have been had Toney been as diligent in training as guys like Hagler, McCallum and Hopkins. A rematch with Jones at LMW in the late 90's could possibly have been more interesting than I've thought previously.
Curry at his best had seriously fast hands too. McCallum may not have fought him at his fastest though. The hook that Curry landed on McCrory is perhaps the fastest punch I can remember. Even on the slow-motion replay it was fast.
Curry was a bit faster at WW, I'd say. That left hook is curiously absent on many lists and compilations of best KO punches actually. It was an absolute stunner. Better even than the left hook Mike KO'd Curry with, I think.
incredible punch. I was watching that fight live and when Curry went down it was almost surreal. Curry made a mistake of backing up with his hands down and Mike timed it. Curry did it a few times before that, and his eye was getting swollen so that factor and Mike being bigger and timing him caused the knockout. Classic.
Now that's why I would call a perfect timed left hook. Fastest punch I can remember (not much faster than this one though) is still Jones Jr against (if I remember correctly) Reggie Johnson. The KD punches, one-two landed on the chin, that was just too damn fast.
Mike says he trapped Curry for that one. Throwing the hook to the body repeated times to make Curry instinctly lower his right to block it and the suddenly going for his chin.
I sort of buy that, although Donald was getting off some good punches which made Sugar Ray Leonard say right before the knockout. "Donald is throwing some beautiful combinations", yet even when Donald threw that combination Ray was talking about seconds before the knockout, he backed up after that punch sequence and you could see him sort of moving his head up to see Mike better , since the swelling was affecting his vision. He still had speed and could punch, but his concentration was being affected, and a guy like McCallum is going to exploit that sort of weakness, especially against a smaller guy. Mike said in the post fight that he set him up, but I think more like he suckered him in by not making him pay at all the other times Donald did that backing up move. Donald was not expecting it at all. I am going to go watch it again right now. Great knockout. So unexpected.
To follow the right hook that he lands to Curry's side with a left hook also to the body should be the natural thing, and Curry's right elbow is also in place to block a left to the liver. Following a right hook to the body with a left hook to the face is rare, especially for McCallum who usually banged both hooks to the body, and I don't think Curry was expecting it at all.
