Any other fighters besides Tyson that were historians of the game?

Tyson Fury has referred to himself as a boxing historian on a number of occasions, but I wasn't blown away by his performance here answering boxing trivia. To be fair though, some of the questions were worded poorly.

John knows his stuff for sure.

 

Always made me smile when Ali would refer to the fighting Marine as Gene “Tooney” - likely pronounced as Ali assumed to be correct, when he first read it in print.

It reminded me of a very old cartoon from I think the 30s that I once saw in which they parodied Tunney as a fish in a rolled open can named Gene “Tuna” Fish.

Dempsey was parodied in the same old cartoon also, maybe he was just called Jack Dempsey since they did name the fish after him - maybe the reason for the fish parody in the first place.

I wonder exactly when the fish was bestowed that honour - now there’s a boxing trivia question - very apt though, those fish are notably aggressive and angry, just like the Old Mauler.

First time I saw one I didn’t know the name/species, - I just commented to the store owner on how the fish swam straight to the aquarium glass and angrily eyeballed me, seriously looking like it wanted to “go me” right there and then. LOL.

The store owner replied “Ah, that’s a Jack Dempsey” - I immediately thought “Well that figures, doesn’t it?”

Cute fish and its angry focus made it all the more interesting and compelling. . Might buy myself one, one of these days - and throw it in with my “Floyd Mayweather”.

 

So was everyone not named Joe Louis. I honest to God think Marciano spanks the forum saint Sonny Liston.

Same way as always? He was great at taking the jab, How does Sonny deal with the inside fighting? He never fought anyone that calibre on the inside with that much power and stamina or skill. He'd be helpless to Marciano's mauling.

 

But Liston’s jab wasn’t of the “always”’variety - more like one of the best, often described as the best since Louis and also described often enough as in fact better than Joe’s.

Liston wasn’t shabby fighting on the inside himself either - perhaps not his first preference but I don’t see Sonny folding or necessarily being overwhelmed on the inside -

 

Don’t look back CT. I can hear Sonny and his red tricycle fast approaching you from behind. Run CT, run!

 

Yeah. Lot of nothing to base that on. Splattering Patterson and Williams and a pair of okay cruisers means nothing. He's less proven then Rocky Marciano yet somehow three times the fighter. I wouldn't bother this forum is pretty much Liston's baby Mumma.

 

At least try to maintain your lead until you pass a Bar, maybe that will cause Sonny to put the brakes on and decide that a few drinks are the better option and drop his deadly pursuit…..for now..….and, if you’re feeling really ballsy, scurry back and pinch his Red Trike while it’s parked outside the bar - you’ll be okay, Sonny will just blame Lennox for it and beat him up instead..yet again.

 

Like let’s be honest. Wlad beat about better guys then Liston. Povetkin, Byrd, Peters etc and cops a third of the ogling. You can’t make a case for it being a great resume. It’s shallow stuff.
