Probably a 10-9 for Williams. His knockdown really wasn't signficant enough to make it a full 10-8 round in my humble opinion.

Really now? :think I'd like to see that scorecard if someone has it because if you're right then those judges are straight up morons or flat out corrupt.

The guys at HBO really need to learn the rules.

No my friend. Like I said, the knockdowns sort of cancel themselves out and it becomes a question of who won the round and like any other non-knockdown round you simply score it 10-9 in favor of the winner because in a 10 point must system you have to award someone a score of 10 unless of course there is a point deduction which I've already explained.

I scored it 10-9 for Williams. Outside of the two knockdowns I felt Williams won the rest of the round by outworking and outlanding Martinez.

****ing hell! :patsch I'd like to see them justify those scores in an interview. There were basically only two significant punches that landed that entire round. The left that Paul threw to knock Martinez down, which was a half grazing balance shot... and the right hook which Martinez threw to knock Williams down, a solid powerpunch Paul was cleary hurt from. Based on that I don't see how there's any other way you can score it but a 10-9 for Sergio Martinez. Unbelieveable. :-(

    Julie Lederman, is that you?

In a professional boxing match what matters most in scoring is clean an effective punches not who throws or lands the most. Williams might have thrown just a few more punches than Martinez did, but by the end of the round the most damage was obviously done by Martinez with that hard right hook he dropped Williams with. That makes it a clear 10-9 for Martinez.

He threw a lot more punches than Martinez actually. You don't score rounds based on who does the most damage either. If you look at one of YOUR earlier post, the rules state that the knockdowns cancel each other out right? So outside of the knockdowns who had the better round?

No, the knockdowns cancel each other out as far as the scoring system goes, but you still factor them in when deciding who won the round. You can't just act as if they never happened... and scoring is based primarly on who did the most damage. Ring generalship and effective aggression and all that matter, but what carries most weight is clean and damaging blows. Volume of punches is in no way mentioned in the scoring of professional fights.

I'm sorry man, but I just don't see how you could give the round for Williams. :bart You're just plain wrong.

Yes indeed. The only one at HBO who understands the rules on scoring a fight is Harold Lederman, and his scorecards often don't make any ****ing sense either. :nut Go fgure.

I disagree. A knockdown is a knockdown and they traded knockdowns.

What carries the most weight in scoring a fight is:
    Clean punching
    Defense
    Ring Generalship
    Effective Aggression

I don't see damage in the scoring system. What if a fighter naturally doesn't punch as hard as his opponent? Do you automatically give it to the harder puncher? How many more fights should Pernell Whitaker or Willie Pep have lost? Did Cory Spinks lose to Judah in their first fight? Wasn't Taylor leading on the scorecards against Chavez?

Disagree with what exactly? Not all knockdown are the same. Paul's knockdown was a grazing shot which dropped Martinez only because he was off balance. Not much damage there.

While Martinez dropped Williams with a lunging right hook that hurt Williams. Big time damage done there. That alone should have won him the round in my eyes and in the eyes of many who saw that fight.

:blood You don't fully comprehend how to score a fight do you? Damage ties in with 'clean and effective punching.' Replace the word damage for effective punching if you'd like. Either way it doesn't matter if you hit hard or not as long as your punches are affecting and hurting your opponent. Sometimes all it takes is a few landed punches to hurt your opponent, sometimes it takes many because you might not be a great puncher, but either way each and every single landed punch causes damage and you as a scorer have to decipher whether or not that accumulated damage is enough for one fighter to win the round over the other... while tying in defense, ring generalshp, and effective aggression as well, but the emphasis is always on effective punching.
