Hmm. well, all of the schools in my city offer multiple disciplines: bjj, boxing, kickboxing etc. . Its not 1 guy teaching all of them, each class has a different instructor, with a head guy running the gym. Maybe where you guys live there are BJJ only schools, but not where I'm at. btw, my first instructor was a black belt (7 years ago, and probably got his black belt years before that). He's a retired old school fighter, and I don't believe he's ranked. it's still a great school.
It isn't BJJ, it's the 6 systems i listed. I'm still debating between this one and the BJJ specific training. This one seems more practical to me but it's more money for less time.
This is why I posted anyways, to get feedback. Both gyms start on Thursday so I have another day to decide.
Ok - I thought you had settled on BJJ. Practicality and budget is important when starting out often overlooked by new students.
There are a lot of 7th dans around in a lot of martial arts these days - some good, some not so much. One instructor teaches 6 styles or is it multiple instructors teaching all the different styles? A better criteria is checking how well represented in local competitions with both results and amount of competitors - look for results in the UK and larger European comps.
We have more of the MMA gyms than just BJJ clubs but both are equally as good BJJ wise as they all run proper syllabus and compete against each other all the time.
That's the one that caught my initial interest. I think I'd rather get decent at one system than mediocre in 6 so I'm leaning towards the BJJ, they encourage more sparring as well which I prefer.
I've messaged the Karate Sensei and explained that as interesting as his class sounds I want to give pure BJJ a go. It's not just the martial art. This class is a fiver for 1 hour 15, the mixed class is 6 quid for 1 hour. So I can spend 6 pound learning more of things badly or 5 pound learning one thing good. It's a no brainer the more I think about it. Lessons start tomorrow so I'll feedback how it went.
So a 4th degree pops in, makes one post in the forum and doesn't answer when asked who he is ranked under. Bit strange.
did my first session today Can't believe how hands on it was. Today we did side control and Darce choke today. I got paired up with this Scottish white belt as we did our drills. He was a bit full of himself though, telling me all my movement was wrong even though I knew I was following instructions. We did open sparring 1 minute bottom, 1 minute top. First time I was top he countered my choke and escaped. Then he went top and I escaped him, second time I went top I locked in the choke and he tapped, second time he went on top I escaped again. So I won 3-1, he was livid. The instructor said it was 6 rounds of rolling next but only white blue belts could partake unless us two teamed up again. He spat his dummy out, blamed it on a loose belt for his Gi and left early. I loved it though, literally better than I expected and I had quite high expectations.
Nice - that was a **** partner you got though. White belts should STFU when any newbie comes in and definitely should not be throwing tantrums. In my club he would be told to partner with purples / browns for the next session and given a humbling - or fark off.
Yeah he had an awful attitude. He got annoyed when I didn't tap during drills, but he hadn't locked the choke in, he put his weight on my arm but hadn't got his arms right to complete the choke, so I didn't tap and he ended up releasing saying he had it locked. I was like "if it was locked and I refused to tap I'd have passed out" About 3 kids I teach are there so I'm a bit limited with who I can spar with.
LOL when I did Judo as a kid I'd always get paired with this girl that had a killer ogoshi. I got pretty good at seeing the world spin round and round and landing on my back.
