You rest on the fence... you rest on the stool. I have no clue what Smith was doing there... other than letting Lawler have free reign at his ribs, that is. The only explanation I have, is that he was waiting for Lawler to punch himself out so he could steal the rest of the round - which is fine, if you have any sense of how to defend yourself for the duration.

Not a great gameplan by Smith. He's been hurt to the body in several fights, and hanging out on the fence eating knees to the ribs is downright silly. I honestly think he would have stopped Lawler if the two kept exchanging away from the fence.
