Are Hagler's title challengers underrated?

Good point, I probably should have said good, or average.

probably no one tbf, without hindsight at least

true enough, my point was just that his challengers were more than just guys moving up(which iv'e read a few times recintly so take it in that context).

It was a fairly weak era

I think the division got better, overall, about the time Hagler quit

His best guys (that he beat) were a blown up Duran, Hearns, Mugabi, Minter, Hamsho, Antofermo and, probably, Roldan.

I think he would have had it tougher if skilled guys like Nunn, Kalambay, Graham and McCallum had been challengers. He probably still beats all of them, though, with Nunn being the toughest challenge.

I thought his challengers were pretty good.

Fulgencio Obelmejias was unqualified on paper but he proved himself a very good challenger. And he was huge, a super-middle really.
Juan D. Roldan was a similar case with a 'padded' South American record.
Mustafa Hamsho was a good fighter.
Tony Sibson was a good fighter.
John Mugabi was a dangerous challenger.

Duran was coming off an impressive 154-pound win against Davey Moore.
And Hearns was coming off his devastating 154-pound win against Duran.

It's interesting how the immediate post-Hagler era of middleweights has become so highly rated.
Truth is, most of the middleweight fighters of that era were no better than the ones Hagler beat. Some actually were the ones Hagler beat.
I suppose Nunn and Kalambay might be the two who would rate above Hagler's challengers.

Interesting choice of words: "Any number of people who could have beaten Alan Minter on the right night"

There may have been a few who could have beaten Minter but not in the way Hagler did, on what should have been anything but 'the right night'.

    Why, yes. In the past 3 years, I've watched Hagler-Antuefermo I & II, Hagler-Watts II, Hagler-Briscoe, Hagler-Minter, Hagler-Hamsho, Hagler-Lee, Hagler-Scypion, Hagler-Hearns, Hagler-Duran, Hagler-Leonard, Hagler-Mugabi, and Hagler-Roldan. Do you ask for a reason?
