Artur Beterbiev vs Rocky Marciano

Archie Moore spent little of his career weighing 160. In fact he had a heavyweight record of about 67-4-3-46. Beterbiev has never fought at heavyweight and has only had 18 pro fights in total. Archie Moore is the all time knockout king and has beaten a practically endless list of hall of famers, ranked contenders and men who have held titles at one point or another. He could punch, box, take a good shot and go 15 rounds. Oh and one other thing…. He was knocked out by Marciano.

 

I'm a fan of Beterbiev and happen to think he's much more than a crude come-forward slugger. That said Marciano is heavier and the classic slugger prototype. Beterbiev specializes in short triphammer blows and Marciano throws the kitchen sink into most of his punches. I don't fancy a lighter hitting, smaller guy beating Marciano even if he is more skilled. Beterbiev has never pretended to be some kind of master boxer fighting off the backfoot. I think Rocky wins this, just as I think Rocky beats Kovalev too.

 

Newer fans have a difficult time with excellent points like these, because they are stuck on the whole size/strength/modern nutritional knowledge thing. They need time to educate themselves & there's plenty of video/reading material out there for them to ingest - hopefully most of them will because, not only is boxing dying, but also fan knowledge as well.

 

Maybe he should ko Bivol before he goes heavyweight,,eh?

 

There is some merit to the size, strength and modern training argument. But I don’t see Beterbiev having much of a physical advantage over Moore. Furthermore, Archie was vastly More skilled and unlike Beterbiev was tested countless times in the heat of adversity. I don’t think Beterbiev has ever really faced a serious challenge or threat

 

Oh I agree there certainly is merit to those things, but they're not enough of themselves and without the activity level/experience against quality opposition to go along with them they don't count for much.

Agree. Both Archie Moore and Artur Beterbiev are 5’11. Beterbiev has only ever fought at 175 and has taken nearly ten years to compile only 18 fights against no one of historical significance. Moore was not only one of the greatest at 175 but was highly effective in the 180’s and 190’s. Just as one example, when Archie was around 48 years old in 1962 he fought a ranked heavyweight named Alajandro Lavorante. Lavorante was over 6’3”, 211 lbs, ranked and had stopped 15 of 19 men. A nearly 50 year old Moore battered him over ten rounds to where Lavorante had to be carried away on a stretcher. I don’t see Beterbiev as a threat.

 

Beterbiev wins this if it's fought under am rules.

 

You're right, fan knowledge also seems to be at an all-time low. I mean, just recently I saw someone claim, that Archie Moore holds the all-time ko record! Can you believe that??

 

I thought Moore possibly has the most KOs, you mean he doesn't hold the record?

I'm not really on board with Beterbiev being smaller or lighter hitting. I think it's pretty close. Rocky did seem to have more one punch ko power to the head though.
