It's funny, he's remembered for frustrating Louis to death and yet this guy could punch! He wasn't all ducking so low his ass hit the mat and clinching. 49 knockouts in 87 wins means he definitely wasn't feather fisted. And his wins are very impressive. Jack Roper, Tony Galento 2x (Before Louis got ahold of him) Buddy Walker, Buddy Knox, he went 1-1-1 against Tommy Loughran, knocked out Luis Angel Firpo, and beat plenty of other solid fighters. Not too bad for a guy who started his career as a SMW/LHW. And of course there's the Ruiz like Joe Louis SD. I forget who but a poster here said that "If you scored the fight on a RD by RD basis Godoy won the fight" even though it was a dull, frustration type win. Similar to the Agnott/Pep win you could say. Thoughts?
He was a solid fighter in the Al Weill stable. Strong, Durable, crouching, Clutching, Swarming, and aggresive at times. Louis clearly beat him in the first fight...only poster i know thinks godoy won the first fight and he posts in this forum. Ive scored it myself and gathered a few historians opinions....Louis clearly won the fight. A fighter who had Godoy's number was Roscoe Toles...I reckon he beat godoy around 4 times?? Overall, Godoy was a solid top 10 contender. Not a world beater, but he had the kind of spoiler style to crack the top 10 in any era. Arturo was actually a very solid older fighter, having some success vs the late 1940s contenders. I think a fighter from the 1930s who often gets misplaced as one of louis "Bums" on the tour(but he was far from it) was Nathan Mann. A very underrated fighter on film and resume.
