Here's a selection of questions for everyone, trying to cover a few bases and not colour things by making my own opinions clear (I am on the fence over a few of these issues, hence the thread): 1 - Do you think GSP is being overlooked/forgotten when it comes to the p4p rankings and ATG/GOAT discussions now because he has been out for so long, and wasn't particularly emphatic vs Jake Shields? GSP has never had his "Sonnen moment" when he got outfought for the majority of any fight, and when you think about it, when was the last time he clearly/decisively lost a round the way that Jones lost round 1 to Machida? Would we be going back to the first Penn fight in 2006, the Serra loss aside (where a full round was not completed)? That's some truly special dominance, considering the consistently high calibre of his opposition 2 - At his best, was GSP the most complete fighter in MMA history? He outwrestled wrestlers, could use his striking to win fights decisively, has a great ground game, etc. I think it's fair enough to say he is more well-rounded than Anderson Silva, though that isn't to say he is more effective overall. Is he the most complete ever, is he the most effective ever at his very best? 3 - If GSP fights and beats Anderson Silva at a 180lbs catchweight, is he the undisputed GOAT? 4 - Does GSP have one of the strongest resumes in MMA history? Same. Only thing it lacked was a finish, but it was such a beatdown it doesn't even matter. That fight showed us GSP was on a completely different level to the other best welterweights.

Aldo was beating the crap out of everyone, Anderson was lighting up Belfort's chin with a beauty of a kick, Dos Santos was, well, knocking everyone out. Even Edgar has his moment when he stopped Maynard. When was the last time GSP KO'd someone in violent fashion? Providing he beats Anderson like nobody else's business, then an argument can be made. The man has beaten everyone he has faced. 4 - Does GSP have one of the strongest resumes in MMA history? Do you think it is better or worse than Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira's resume? At this point, I still consider Nog's resume better. However, GSP still has room to easily take the cake. A fight with Nog's student at 185 will provide that. 5 - Do you consider the current GSP to be inferior to how he was a few years back? He might even be better, the guy never stopped training and improving the overall aspect of his game, however, he never won by explosive stoppages w\for a while that people tend to overlook this fact. 6 - If Condit beats GSP, how much does that harm his legacy/all-time standing? I won't really consider it a detriment as he has accomplished a lot at 170. Although his designation as the best at 170 GOAT might be placed back to debatable status against the man he succeeded, Hughes. 7 - If you had to name only one, what do you think was GSP's finest all-round performance? Just for me, it's the 2nd Penn fight. Another great fighter who just had an unstoppable run at 155 and a former 170 lb champion himself, getting manhandled like a contender who don't share a ring with him.
1 - Yes, I have seen lists with him as low as 4 or 5. He is injured, not losing. 2 - I would give that title to Fedor, who not only beat fighters at their own game but beat other ATG's who where renowned for their ability. 3 - An argument can be made depending on how well Silva performs after the lost. 4 - It is up there and close to or on par with Nogueiras. 5 - I think we have to wait and see how his injuries have affected him. 6 - Depends on whether he gets knocked out and how well he performs after. If he goes on to win a rematch and dominate the division again I think it won't affect him too much due to his long lay off. 7 - 3rd Hughes fight or the 2nd Penn fight.
SugarShane_24: I think your post was solid and I enjoyed reading it, but I must pick you up on one statement: :huh How the hell can you say GSP didn't shine in the wrestling/grappling department?! I think you should ask elite, decorated wrestlers like Hughes, Koscheck and Fitch if GSP didn't shine in their area!!
Sorry, may have misunderstood me there Kitt. (or may have said it the wrong way) Maybe I was a bit too harsh about it (wrestling), but certainly there are better strikers, herder punchers or kickers, better submission artists, but overall the package ain't as good as GSP.
Fair enough man, I see your point. He is very well-rounded indeed, but doesn't have the finishing ability of many of his ATG peers.
