At 143.5, could Marquez pose Floyd a real challenge?

Lightweight looks like Marquez' home. He seems to hod the weight better.

But I have to say MArquez' footwork is goign with age, he is standing alot more in front of his target lookin to engage.

I think Floyd would dominate /Ko him....but I think a 2 year lay off would make things interesting in the inital rounds.

 

I disagree.Diaz almost got to him.If it was Hatton maybe he couldn't got him off.
Mayweather would be too much at 140 too.

Marquez could win a few rounds because Floyd takes rounds off, but he'd get knocked out. Marquez has fought his last two fights with more of a brawling style. There's just no way any smaller guy beats Mayweather with that style, and Marquez isn't quick enough to win if he goes back to his counterpunching style.

 

Some people call Floyd small welterweight. Thats because there are some freak welterweights out there. But the true is Floyd is taller and has longer reach than Miguel Cotto. So he is not small at all. He is too big for JMM

What people are forgetting is that not only is Floyd bigger, but he is also flat out better. Floyd Mayweather Jr. is a BETTER fighter than Juan Manuel Marquez, flat out. The only hope Marquez would have would be for Floyd to cut unnecessary weight that drains him. As for them just meeting on even terms, Floyd wins the fight.

 

If Marquez, as the smaller man in the ring, went in there and tried to fight with a bigger man's "imposition of will" type approach, he'd definitely earn my respect. It's hard to see him making it stick though with the size disadvantage, and even with the layoff, I can't imagine Floyd's defensive skills being so rusty that pressure from Marquez will send him for a loop. Of course if he's obviously behind he'll have to start pressing, but he's got try what he does best first.

When Marquez gets into his rhythm, he also controls distance as well as anybody in the sport, which has the effect of blunting speed. Manny's handspeed was a surprising non-factor when the two squared off on the outside, it was in close exchanges that Manny turned moments into the firefights that won him rounds, especially in the second fight.

I hope we can all agree that even at 140+, Marquez brings a more balanced challenge than Judah.

as much as i like marquez and his style i agree with you.

 

It's not even just that. Floyd is the BETTER fighter, who is also bigger. It would be different if Marquez was the better fighter, while smaller. Marquez just doesn't have any advantages going into this one.

 

Just to play devils advocate, we're not exactly talking Tyson - Spinks here. They are both 5'7, and one "half" weight class apart naturally.

I'd say it's more like phenomenal little man beats good little man.

 

If Floyd could still make 140, then he should fight JMM at that weight. I think it's too much to ask for JMM to jump 2 divisions up in order to fight a younger and undefeated P4P#1 fighter.
