Good. When this show was announced, they were trumpeting him getting a shot at the 'Australasian' title. Gal seemed enthused. Only problem was the 'Australasian' title doesn't mean anything. A true Australasian title is a fight between the reigning Australian & New Zealand champs in a particular weight division which rarely happens. I've actually got no idea what the version people regularly fight for is supposed to represent. Fighting for the national title means something though so good on him. Looking forward to the whole show. TOT (The Other Tszyu), Harry Garside & Sam Goodman are all featured.
Presumably Huni v Goodall will be for a regional strap & world ranking. No need for the Aussie belt. Gal has always wanted a crack at it so glad he's getting one.
That would be a top 15 world ranking with each of those sanctioning bodies for the winner. Knocking over two undefeated medalists from the 2017 World Amateur Championships in his first six pro fights would be a decent start to Huni's professional career, notwithstanding the setbacks he's endured over the last twelve months.
I think there's a good pathway locally for Huni for the foreseeable future. We know Joe Goodall is next & then Kiki Toa Leutele on the Jai Opetaia world title bill after that. There have also been reports of Dean Lonergan negotiating with Willis Meehan for a fight sooner rather than later so that's possibly his next three which would move him to 8 and 0. That would leave two Kiwis, Hemi Ahio & Junior Fa, plus two Australians in Demsey McKean & Lucas Browne as viable opponents for him locally. He'd probably be very high up in the world rankings after kicking back sanctioning fees to the IBF and/or WBO for some or all of those fights.
I agree Sandman. There are enough challenges locally and from across the ditch to help build his profile and gradually increase the difficulty in opponent. I dont particularly care for the Sonny Bill fight but it does seem logical in the mid term as both have something each other desire. For Huni it will be a chance to increase his exposure and fanbase among the casuals. Also financially I can't see a better fight on the horizon. For Sonny Bill it's a chance for legitimacy and legacy. The only spanner in the works I see there is I'm not confident at all Gal beats Kris. I really think they will find him difficult. Which subsequently jeopardises the Gal-SBW fight. But even if Paul gets past the Melbournian then there is no guarantee Sonny Bill will beat him. Many feel it won't go that way. No one wants to see Gal-Huni 2 and Williams losing to Gal would certainly sink a future fight between Huni-SBW.
I don't think Dunny Bill has quite the same calzones as Gal & would avoid a Huni showdown on the basis that he wouldn't win. I can see SBW fighting Gal b/c he will fancy his chances. I think Dunny Bill is principally interested in self-promotion. There was an element of altruism in Gal electing to fight Huni. Sure, he was getting well paid for it & wanted to test himself against the best, but I also think he wanted to give the young bloke a chance to make a name for himself. I can't see Dunny Bill doing that but we'll see. I agree it would be a worthwhile fight from Huni's perspective but I doubt SBW will be quite as willing to give the young bloke a leg up in the way that Gal was.
This is spot on in regards to SBW I reckon the bloke is a selfish greedy egomaniac I am not buying the nice guy act at all. Gallen also is greedy but he genuinely has that junkyard dog mentality he likes to fight and has the calzones. I mean he agreed to fight the likes of Huni, Browne and Hunt who were all favored to take his head off. SBW has never taken a fight that he didn't 100% think he would win and I think the fact that he is with Stan is going to be a massive road block in the way of fighting the likes of Gallen and Huni.
I think he can do it G-Man but he has to bring out his inner toa because Juggas will be all up in that.
