Sharkey outboxes Baer until he gets KO'd. Max was a physically strong guy, a puncher, who had a solid chin, and in shape, I think he catches up with Jack somewhere. I think Schmeling beat Sharkey despite the scoring, and Baer is even stronger than Schmeling, though without the speed and timing. But that brute force coming at Sharkey round after round would be a tough order. However, is it possible for Sharkey to win a decision. Sure. But we'll never know.
In practice theis fight could have taken place, but it would probably have involved a streaking Max Baer beating up on a declining Jack Sharkey.
Bodhi...just what did Baer do to Schmeling in that last round???? How would you define a "clobbering" anyway? Just curious...and by the way, I'm a huge fan of MaxShmeling, whom I would rate ahead of Baer overall as a fighter...but he gets his head handed to him head to head vs Baer.
The Schmeling fight is Baer's most impressive win ... by all accounts Schmeling should have outpointed him but he got crushed ... then again, Schmeling was an inconsistent fighter in his own right ... extremely brave though ... Baer hit him with many terrific shots before he was stopped ..
Clobbering for me is a synonym for dominating. That did not happen. And no, Schmeling get´s not necessarily his ass handed to him by Baer. Baer himself said, Schmeling got him hurt and could have taken him but luckily for him didn´t realize it.
Schmeling was not inconsistent. From his early loss against Daniels to his loss against Louis, he lost exactly 3 fights and drawed ones. The draw and one loss he avenged shortly after. Another loss shouldn´t even be a loss but a win. Only the loss to Baer stands and that was a toss up at the time of the stoppage. That´s not inconsistent. From the time he came to America in 1928 until 1938 he was every year ranked in the Top5 but one, most of the time in the Top3. That´s 9 years. There aren´t many hws who can say the same.
