Rewatched some of his early fights pre-Trinidad. He was a really fast starter in his early years in boxing and very aggressive at times. People always saying that Hopkins is a boring fighter haven't seen his early fights. Hopkins in his physical prime was fast and entertaining, although not as technically polished as the fighter he would become years later. I think his best performance was against Glen Johnson or Echols, where he was a complete fighter.

Watching Hopkins fights that took place a decade ago or more just put into perspective how much he has faded since then. He's almost 47, so obviously that's going to be the case, but he was a truly great fighter and while he could be ugly to watch, at other times, he was nothing short of brilliant.

Hopkins has always been fundamentally sound and there are comments about that in his first title attempt in 1993. The thing was that the way he came through Mercado in the rematch, the wins against Echols, Allen, Jackson and methodically damaged Keith Holmes with non-stop aggressiveness was the difference. For me it's good either way, the guy is a mentally strong, physically superb specimen who can execute whatever gameplan they lay out for him.
