It's not just the combinations he's missing these days though. He doesn't have the overall fluidity he used to. He's not as light on his feet, doesn't even bend his knees as much, doesn't move his head as much, and he isn't as sharp and quick as he was at lower weights. He's a flat-footed plodder who just walks toward opponents in a high guard swinging big hooks these days, whereas I feel had he more nuance when he was younger.
Um, Canelo was as stiff as a board at 154. It wasn´t until the Golovkin rematch that he started showing more fluid headmovement. At 154 he would show slickness, but only when going full defensive mode. This content is protected He is more precise with his punches these days. His footwork is far more refined and he is able to put weight behind his punches, unlike at the lower weights. Canelo had to change anyways as he is fighting far bigger opponents these days. At 154 he was a counter puncher who threw in combinations. Now he is a pressure fighter who baits openings to land single shots. He has changed a lot, but to say that Canelo at 154 was better is just laughable. I think very few would agree with you.
Maybe I just find him more aesthetically pleaser when he was younger but I do feel that he had to try harder when he was younger because he knew his opponents were trying to beat him and hurt him. I haven't seen many of Canelo's recent opponents try to really hurt Canelo. Kovalev barely tried to hurt him, as did Jermell, Smith, Ryder, and even Bivol wasn't trying especially hard to hurt him. Of course everyone knows he has a very good chin but he is still mortal and can be hurt and can be knocked out. The last guy I remember seeing really trying to stop Canelo was Golovkin in the second fight where he did have a couple moments where he had Canelo genuinely hurt and jumped on him. Canelo had to respect his opponents more and had to try much harder to maintain the fight at the range he wants because the guys he was fighting didn't respect him the same way some of the guys do now. I'm not too sure about how much his footwork has improved either, just compare how much Canelo brings his feet together or crosses his feet against Smith, compared to how well he keeps his base and how much bouncier and quicker he is on his feet against Jose Cotto for example: This content is protected This content is protected I think he was still slick and fluid at 154 btw, and he showed as much against Trout, Angulo, and Cintron. This content is protected I do believe that 154 was his best weight and that Canelo did his best work and put on his best performances there but I'm happy to agree to disagree with you if you think otherwise.
Kirkland...great ko. Kovalev was an alcoholic has been who had been in a very tough fight only a month earlier, which is why Canelo cherry picked him. Yes, he did well in GGG2 in a losing effort.
2nd GGG fight. Clear win in a good fight against a great opponent. Also came to the fight with a completely different tactic than the first fight to great effect. I do think he doesn’t utilize his combinations enough over the last several years though, and that he had beautiful combinations when he did. I assume it may be more a result of bulking up a lot + aging rather than an intentional style change. He’s really put on a lot of muscle, looks like a blowfish compared to his younger self.
Golovkin vs Canelo 1 is rightly controversial but I don't really see anything controversial with their 2nd fight. Canelo this time was the aggressor and landed the harder punches I see nothing with Canelo getting the nod in their 2nd fight.
