76 and 84 teams come to mind.

76 had Sugar Ray Leonard, Howard Davis, the Spinks brothers, John Tate, and Leo Randolph and Charles Mooney that I don't know.
    These dudes all got medals.

84 was Holyfield, Whitaker, Biggs, Frank Tate, Meldrick Taylor, Mark Breland, Virgil Hill and Paul Gonzalez that I don't know. All got medals and mostly golds.

Also i just read somewhere where the talk is boxing, an article talking about the US olympic team where it mentions 9 athletes going to the games, and it mentions Luis Yanez as one of them so I guess he's either temporarily back on the team or he won his appeal or this article is fully of it.

Eitherway here's the skinny on Yanez:

Luis Yáñez – 20 yrs old, junior flyweight, Southpaw. Ranked 6th in the world atLight Flyweight 51 kg (but I'm pretty sure he fights at 48 kg - not sure whats up here). 26-3 in international competition, 89-0 domestically over the last five years. Lost in 2007 World Amateur Boxing Championships to eventual silver medalist. Won National Golden Gloves, in 2006 and 2007. Best known for winning the PanAmerican title 2007 at junior flyweight.

Yes, I'm an amateur boxer (2012 Olympics is my goal) and I have friends who went to this year's Olympic Trials.

On the '76 Team, The Spinks brothers, Ray Leonard, and John Tate all come to mind. Only one didn't turn pro, Charles Mooney, because he was career Army (he's my old coach).

On the 84 team, nearly the whole team made a splash. Evander Holyfield, Meldrick Taylor, Pernell Whitaker, Tyrell Biggs...there were a lot of them.

based on what. the 76 team faced the best the world had to offer and came away with 5 golds.

the 84 team did not have to face cuba and the soviet bloc teams.

WTF? The oldest member of Team USA this year is Shawn Estrada, and he's 23. After him is Deontay Wilder at 22 and Rau'shee Warren at 21. They're all still really young.

I believe Christopher Downs was over 30. He won the trials but didn't secure qualification.

Yeah, Chris is 33 and is career Army, but he didn't qualify. He would have been the oldest American boxer to go to the Olympics.

    That's a no-brainer, which means it's perfectly suited for me.....1976!
I wish you young guys and gals could have watched the Olympics live that year. They were in Montreal, no time delays and the TV coverage of our fighters was magnificent. Our fighters were both proud and tough!

God, I hate to sound like a sentimental ...back in my day, JERK!
    Oil well.

    Hey it's 2008 - GO BOYS!

No team in the entire Olympics can compare or match Cuba's boxing record.

    Trivia Quiz:

Without looking it up, who was the only gold medalist from the 1976 team that didn't win a world title as a professional?

What happened? I thought the Yanks were very strict on that 'first past the post' system? The athletic team leave out world champs and record holders if they don't qualify in the trials.

76 had two great fightrs in leonard an spinks

84 had 3 great fighters in Holyfield, sweet pea and meldrick taylor

i would go with 84 as it also produced more world champs

what about 1988. that give us jones jnr, carbajal, bowe, mercer, Kennedy McKinney
