Best fighter you`ve ever seen in their prime ?

Word 'clown' referring to Pep was used by some contemporary writers (such as in NY Times) not by me.

 

Why would I not believe in facts? What I wrote was based on primary sources, that I like and trust more than 99% of stuff you find on internet sites and in books, that are written by people with pink glasses on. Some people consider even the rebuttal of popular myth about Pep winning a round without throwing a punch, to be personal offense and showing disrespect to Pep. Whereas I haven't said a word of what I think of Pep, his greatness or placement in history.

 

Actually Pep pretty much cleaned out every major Ring Magazine top 10 rated man from 1940-1950 in dominating fashion....Pep cleaned out his division over a span of a decade like no man ever did, he ducked no one, and some of the top rated men he beat were VERY good fighters.

 

The plane crash had taken place in 1950? That's news to me. I wrote "at the time" as in prior to plane crash.

 

So what exactley is your point...That Willie Pep, who broke his back and suffered permant physical damage from a near fatal plane crash(in which others aboard died), was still in his prime post plane crash? :huh

 

My point is prior to the crash he fought mostly nobodies, very few of his opponents were good.

 

Greatest fighter I ever seen on film at their best? Hard to say, its quite a toss up between Robinson, Duran, Chavez and Archie Moore. Greatest fighter in their prime I have seen fight in my life time? James Toney, Roy Jones, Bernard Hopkins, Manny Pacquia, Oscar De La Hoya to name a few. By the time I watched boxing reguarly, guys like Whitaker and Chavez were on the downside or had retired. Funny, I can remember when Leonard fought Lalonde, and years later be destroyed by Camacho and Norris.

 

It depends on what criterion you use,I guess.

Of course if you go purely for effectiveness in the ring, you'll just end up with heavyweights.

Whitaker, Chavez. I would also say Jones, Jr. but I may have seen just after his prime.
