Hector Lopez was really talented. He possibly could have won a world title at Featherweight or Junior Lightweight if he had not been derailed by a prison stint in the late '80's. He came back to have a respectable career at higher weights but I think he missed his window of opportunity.
Lopez could have been Champion with a little more discipline. he looked like a natural. He had good offense and defense. He tended to throw too few punches. Part of that could have been due to poor conditioning. The Quartey fight was very close. He also lost a competitive fight to James Page.
There was a '60s middleweight from Mexico named Rafael Gutierrez who I would pick in a heartbeat over Chavez, Jr. (if you were looking solely for a Mexican middle). Came along at a tough time but stull managed to pick up wins over Luis Rodriguez, Curtis Cokes, LC Morgan, Nate Collins and drew a couple of times with Denny Moyer. Also to add to the ever-growing list I would name Ricardo 'Pajarito' Moreno, Battling Torres and Rogelio Lara. It's like Al Francis said, some great bunch of fighters here to choose from.
I think Pajarito might have been the best punchers of them all. All but one of his victories came by KO and he had a lot of fights.
I didn't go near Arizmendi because he did hold some version of the featherweight title. Maybe I'm being too literal. Baby Casanova is a great pick though. Also, I've heard a bit about Aurelio Herrera, but have never seen footage of him. A turn of the century fighter.
Agreed. He had very heavy hands, too. From what I heard, he preferred surfing and weed to boxing. I don't say I can really blame him. He did come back after the Page fight and fight at middle and lightheavy on a definite lower tier. Waste of talent, for sure.
