lewis was a disturbing result but going into the fight foreman-moorer was not 50-50.

I remember holyfeild moorer1 and evander was well outboxed, sure there was something wrong with him but moorer beat the linear guy that night who beat a younger foreman than moorer did.

there was a short list of contenders around favoured to beat moorer at that time but george was not one of them, thats why atlas took that fight!

comeback foreman made his name that night. he was seen as a celebrity fighter, an old stager who could go the distance, Not a genuine contender. he wasnt even ranked and had not fought in 17months.

    Hmm...tough one actually.

Foreman was actually just a 3-1 underdog against Moorer. Despite him just having beaten Holyfield, the narrowness of the decision and Moorer's rather reticent nature (he even threatened to just retire rather than defend the titles) combined with Foreman's heavy punches and Moorer's chin having failed him a few times already got some big money in on old George.

Despite his long layoff, despite his outboxing by Morrison and hammering en route to winning against Stewart, some people could see George winning. If not when the fight was first signed, certainly the closer it got to fight night (George could certainly talk up a fight, after all).

McCall was around about a 5-1 'dog.
Media opinion of Lewis was only a bit better than Moorer at the time, but Ollie wasn't exactly getting showered with praise either and was still most famous as 'Mike Tyson's sparring partner' despite the up-turn in his career over the past three years. It was seen as more Don King manoeuvring, with the odds only lowering closer to fight time due to Steward being brought on board and a few journos rumbling about problems in Lewis's training camp.

    So I guess I'd say Lewis-McCall.

Funny really, though. When I think about it now, both were shocks but not as absolutely huge knock-you-over shocks as perceived. Still big upsets...but not exactly Buster's famous 42-1 or anything. I think for a true huge shock you need a very valued challenger and undervalued underdog, and in both Lewis and Moorer's case at the time they had more critics than fans, in the media at least.

    well said.

Odds I had were 4-1 Lewis over McCall. You'd have thought he was a bigger favorite than that, but lots of smart $$$ always comes in on the DKP fighters in title opportunities.

Like you said, big but not huge upsets. And not unseen. Berbick over Thomas and Page over Coetzee were bigger shockers. But the media bought into Thomas a lot and nobody thought much of Page in that timeframe to be taking his act on the road and going into a lions den and getting a W. So you did have that valued challenger vs undervalued dog thing at work. It's such a fickle thing with media hype and love and the heavyweight division.
