Floyd Patterson’s one of my heroes but I can’t disagree with this.
Floyd gained more respect after he lost the title.

I agree. When Cus D'Amato was in charge he cherry-picked for Floyd. Not so much with Jackson and Rademacher because Jackson was the No. 1 contender and the Rademacher fight was only three weeks later (Cus was within his rights as the Rademacher guarantee was $250,000, more money at the time than was available for fighting any other contender). BUT 1958 WAS THE YEAR D'AMATO AVOIDED PATTERSON'S TWO TOP CONTENDERS. Patterson took on Roy Harris who was a soft touch compared with Eddie Machen and Zora Folley. The fact that those two fought to a boring draw provided Cus cover for the Harris fight, but it was in no sense a justification in my book because both Machen and Folley were light years better than Harris. Theoretically, Patterson was supposed to defend his title every six months and he surely could have fit in another title defense sometime during 1958 either before or after the Harris fight. Brian London was a weak choice as well for the first part of 1959, but at least Patterson was already planning to fight No. 1 Johansson at the time.

I don’t agree with Mayweather jr being a cherry picker. Sure in his twenty years in the sport there were a couple guys he didn’t fight. But that record is positively loaded with world champions, top contenders and some hall of famers. Hell, he even moved up in weight to face some of them and in a few cases they were a hell of a lot younger than he was !!

Because he didn't CherryPick Holyfield. He faced an alltime great undefeated Heavyweight Champion in his prime.

    Terry Norris.
Got a name beating on the overrated Ray Leonard who was only a part time fighter at that point.
After that he decided he would only fight smaller Welterweights moving up or sometimes even Jr Welters. Donald Curry (shopworn) or a (Shot) Meldrick Taylor. Simon Brown? Whoops! Even a Cherry Picker cant always overcome Fine China in that chin.
Never once moved up to face James Toney or anyone of note. Was too busy crashing Chavez's fight parties looking to bully a former Featherweight.
Even ducked Trinidad when he realized Tito was actually much bigger than him.

Holmes post Witherspoon was absolutely woeful.

Guys like Mugabi and Cooney (and so many others) were brought along very very conservatively but it probably wasn't their fault. In ways there was merit in this and in other ways there wasn't.

For the complete opposite look at guys like Hagler and Duran. Hagler's championship ethics were pure perfection as he looked for one challenge after another and delighted in fighting the best in what was a pretty average era of natural middleweights. Duran, no doubt in no small part money motivated, just loved fighting the top dogs.
