Kevin Finnegan never gave up, never turned his back, fought on with numerous lacerations, broken eye sockets, nose, etc. Although a stylist, never turned down a toe-to-toe exchange. Floored once amatuer or pro, up straight away of course, to win the fight. Had jaw bust early on in a fight, won that one too. I always find it even more impressive when fighters regarded as 'cuties' also have this kind of toughness.

ps. When I hear the word 'heart', the image of Basilio always crops up first.

Not taking away from his toughness but he seemed to quit against Charlie Weir. What was the story there?

i've gotta go with evander holyfield. All of these men are ATG's but his desire to claim victory was just immense. Not taking away from the likes of ali or frazier, but holyfield took it to a new level.

Almost no one can touch Holyfield ... he almost fins it beyond comprehensive thought to consider he can lose .. of course many others shared tremendous heart but in recent times Evander was simply a stand out ,,,

Marciano beats all those in the poll, IMO..the second fight with Charles and the first with Walcott come to mind.

What does the level of which he fought at have to do with his heart? You asked what other fighters would get up after being knocked down so many times, and I gave you one.

Buster Drayton was a good banger, and the knockdowns he was scoring on Kaylor were brutal. And there was no mandatory eight count in Britain at the time,so Kaylor wasn't awarded any time to recover.

No appreciation for Tommy Collins's never-say-die effort against Jimmy Carter?

Excellent points ... he's right up there ... few remember how nasty and weird the Charles cut was and that the bout could have been stopped at any time ... the way Rocky rallied was straight out of a movie ...
