Loughran was not one handed. You can see him mixing sneaky right hands and uppercuts all the time once he get's them set up. They might not have power behind them but they're almost always on the mark. The jab is what you see most of the time because of it's tactical value in his style. I'm not sure Conn has the faster hands either, it's just that you'll never gonna see Loughran putting more than two punches together. His usual gameplan demanded fast hands. I think Conn's advantages would've been his versatility, stamina and toughness. Also, using Loughran's performance against Tunney (as impressive as it were) as the sole factor to judge how he would fare against Conn is kinda misleading. A lot of water under the bridge would pass between his fight with Tunney and his actual prime when he owned the division for almost three years. He was yet to pick a few losses to Stribling, Ad Stone, and to Delaney himself. Who, by the way is, yes, a little overlooked. One of the few unfinished businesses that Loughran left behind when he moved to HW. Never could truly snatch one from Delaney (even if Tommy was still a little green when they met.).
Tough fight and they could split a few....I rate Moore higher but Billy also beat some good heavyweights...as a light heavy Archie has to be # 1
Film The Fortune Cookie - Moore's character "went 12 rounds with Billy Conn " I wouldn't like to pick a winner.
One of those fights where there's really no wrong answer as to who the winner would be. I'll go Moore, and with no one particular reason.
I’d favor Moore but there’s a very real possibility Conn could win a decision. If they fought 3-4 times then conn would definitely take at least one of those fights.
I think Moore. Better puncher, better jab, probably the better technician, stronger, I think Conn end up being edged outside though it could get cloudy. Keeping Moore busy would be even tougher than keeping Louis busy, I think.
Sort of like asking who would win a chess match. They both have so many options, that you cant factor in.
Every world championship cycle we predict the outcome of the most complicated chess match of that year in the Lounge - usually get it right, too. Just saying!
Grinding my teeth thinking about a winner of this. In a series each would definitely pick up at least 1 win I agree w that earlier assessment. To win one fight, my bias goes Moore but it'd b foolish to leave Conn out he's of that S tier class of LHWs too. Neither w a style to cancel out the other either so a hard one to call. In the meantime, I needa read up on both n start on the other boxing literature I have haha.
It's a pleasure to read the classic Burt posts on this thread. As far as the result, it could go either way. I saw recently where someone said Conn's resume was light which I don't agree with. Moore's resume was legendarily deep. And they both got beat by the right fighters at the right time. Put a gun to my head and I'm going with Moore because of his power edge.
