I saw my first fight card when David slew Goliath...But David was disqualified because he used a sling shot...Bad boy !!!
Seriously, I have posted my background many times on ESB, but one moh time...As a young boy my family lived next door to a trainer of John Henry Lewis, the great LH champion. Every night I would go next door, and spar with JH Lewis's stablemates who sort of adopted me. I never saw JH Lewis but most of his stablemates ...I remember always eating a salad with olive oil most every night, a practice I still observe to this day...One of the sparing mates was a WW named tommy Jones who was fond of me but had to go to Australia to get bouts ..I recall being sad at his departure...
The first pro main event my dad took me to was a bout between the new sensation Beau Jack from Augusta, Ga. against a tough Eastside lightrweight named Terry Young at St. Nick's Arena...A great fight it was and I was "hooked" on boxing from that night on, seeing most every fight at MSG Friday nights with my dad who boxed in smokers when he was a lad .And we attended fights during the week when my dad was available, in so many fight clubs in the NY area, as St Nicks, Ridgewood Grove, B'wy Arena, Coney Island Veledrome, Dexter Park, Eastern P'ky Arena, Ft. Hamilton, and a few others...We attended most all Golden Glove events
we could, but my favorite boxing spot was at Stillman's gym where I as a youngster would go at least weekly and see upclose hundreds of the greatest fighters in the world...I was in heaven then. Yessir...
Hope I answered your query CP. ?...
