Bob Foster's left hook on Mike Quarry

it is surely one of the most devastating ko's of all times (similar to J.J's ko over graham) :good.

 

Just as bad/good as his hook from hell on Tiger.

Probably my all-time favourite KO. Notice Bob's little wink as Mike goes down.

 

Hellish, brutal KO.

I feel like laughing and shaking my head at how often Foster gets tagged with the left hook though... even the knockout Frazier laid on him couldn't convince Foster to carry his right hand up.

 

The punch that connects while you're in process of throwing one yourself nearly always results in a knockout.. what a great left hook.

It's interesting how Foster looks near immortal against Quarry (or any LHW he fought), but like a weak, chanceless ragdoll against Frazier.

Its a pity for Mike he was up against a Prime Foster, He showed good Ability and the Quarry Grit, I might have fancied this Abitious Quarry to have perhaps Beaten earlier Foster rival Rondon if he could have got to him before Bob Did, After this Mike to a degree went through the motions in his career, a good young fighter (pre Foster) nonetheless,

And to think Brother Jerry after watching that, had to Then go in and Fight Ali ! - not a good night for the Quarry clan !

 

The thing with that ko is the caliber of guy it came against. The 35-0 guy with 6 ko's is always the toughest guy to knockout in the sport. Very very tough to hit clean. They get all their results via ringsmarts. You flat out just don't see those kinds of fighters getting 1 punched.

The other thing you don't see are managers putting their old champion in with a youthful guy with that kind of style. They'll take on punchers from time to time but nobody wants the old guy in with the slickster 10 or 12 years younger. But Foster fought anyone,anywhere, anytime and got the results. And that punch ruined Mike Quarry who had a real nice looking career at his fingertips at the time.

 

I remember reading an article about the negotiations prior to the fight. Allegedly Foster advised Quarry's managers to wait another year before challenging for the title. Foster thought Quarry was an excellent prospect, but felt he needed a little more seasoning before taking this fight. Turns out that Foster was correct.

Quarry was highly ranked going into this bout, but his only top flight experience was a DQ win over Jimmy Dupree.

 

That's true, but he had pedigree and was a guy everyone was watching. The trouble with putting someone in with a Foster was the potential damage to a fighter's career if they lost. Foster did ruin some fighters and it's a whole different risk than fighting other styles were the repurcussions of a defeat aren't so dramatic.

I always wonder what the tipping point is when the managers take the money and put their guy in under those conditions. It's a tough call for sure, but I just never ever thought the quarry folks were getting all that much money and I'm fairly certain there would've been a rematch clause. Tough, tough guy to beat twice, but then again Foster had shown deterioration and a slickster/cutie pie is always a tough matchup for the old champ.

The great managers and trainers seem to guage exactly where that tipping point is though and it's a tightrope act when the opponent is a guy like Bob Foster. But didn't Clancy bring in Ahumada under similar conditions in Foster's next bout & get the draw in his backyard?

The KO of Tiger is equally brutal ...

 

Non anabolic assisted bulk ups will do that to many a fighter.

Foster had a unique build but he was a 175 pound fighter.

He was giving over 40 pounds away to both Ali and Frazier, and Foster was never a elusive fighter.

 

Mike Quarry had said he had sparred with his hvywt brother Jerry and was not afraid of Bob's punch.

Bob said Mike was an excellent fighter and, yes, did say later he was afraid he had killed Mike with that hook.
