I may watch this again later tonight if I can watch the other one I have slated for later in good time (Canzoneri/Chocolate). I'll report back if I do.
what is truly amazing is that it is only you and "foreman hook" who make bowe such a wide winner over tubbs.:deal
well its the same "joke" that boxing illustrated's and KO magazine's ringside reporters told in their magazine at the time. Remember watching a fight live is better than scoring from an old TV recording. It is also the same way a lot of boxing people saw the fight. everything I have said on the fight is in line with mcgrain on post #30. 8-2 is a one sided fight. This was not a one sided fight.
No he scored it for Bowe. Regardless it wasnt some bad decision and the actual scorecards well represent the general consensus on this forum that the fight was somewhat tight although clearly a Bowe win. Also whats been a common topic on this forum was that somehow Tubbs exposed Bowe's shortcomings that would have come out in future fights, but in reality the fight represented and proved exactly what it was supposed to. A crafty former champion was matched against a young up and coming contender and extended him the distance in a losing effort. The only thing it proved was that Bowe could have increased his offense even more and Bowe became more aggressive leading up to his title fight some eight fights later. It wasnt some showcase of how bad Bowes defense was that so many have claimed on here before. You scored it 6-3 Tubbs, thats pretty one sided and pretty far off base.
8-2 is laughable really for either figher. While I scored it 6-4 in favor of Bowe; I can envision a draw being fair. Scoring 6-4 in favor of Tubbs is reaching but I've seen decisions that are far worse.
BOXING ILLUSTRATED quoted Bowe: "I think the first five rounds were the deciding factor." Bowe continuted, "From the sixth round on he tried to make the fight closer but I had already won the first five rounds." Richard Strange gave Bowe two of the first five and Jean Williams and Frank J. Cairo three of the first five. Anyway, for what it's worth, I just re-watched it and I scored it 96-94 for Tubbs. B - T 10-9 9-10 9-10 9-10 9-10 10-9 10-9 9-10 9-10 10-9 94/96
No I dont think bowe was exposed here. It was just his doug jones fight. a difficult close fight open to interpretation. Lewis had mercer, patterson had maxim, tyson had tillis, marciano had lastarza, joe louis had pastor. All these champions were beter than their rivals but made to look human stepping up a level during the development stage.. I think bowe proved he was the beter fighter in the first round then went to sleep. the rounds after this were all quiet rounds and both were ineffective in their own way. Tubbs not wasting much but not making any impresion and bowe stalking but missing. I do think going to sleep in fights was something of a running theme in bowes career. A small fault that held him back just a tad.
I had Tyson-Tillis 8-2, as did the Judge Tony Moret. Plus Tyson knocked him down in style with a beautiful counter in the 4th. 98-91 is the correct way to score that fight.
there is no such thing as a corect score for any paticular fight. simply a popular decision or an unpopular decision. the fact that you score both tubbs-bowe and tillis-tyson the same way says something. dosnt make it right or wrong though.
I had Tillis-Tyson 6-4 for Mike plus the KD, so 96-93. If that helps any. Mike had a good 10th but seemed to drift a bit in the middle rounds, like after the knockdown he thought it would be simple and instead let Tillis nick rounds by falling into inactive clinches and following him around loading up. Got his head straight though and finished strong, pressured Tillis and got busier. Following around is also what I think Bowe was guilty of against Tubbs. Bowe loved going for knockouts, it's a large part of what made him so popular, so instead of cutting the ring off properly he'd tend to just go straight ahead after opponents. When you have a fairly mobile and slick guy like Tubbs to chase, pretty frustrating. When it's a guy like Holyfield that'll normally come right at you as well, you get a tremendous trilogy of fights.
Again, the purpose of this thread was to show Bowe was not struggling or being exposed, which seems to be a common comment made when discussing Bowe. Bowe didnt get a gift here, he could have fought better, but it was simply a typical learning experience for an elite fighter on his way up the ranks.
Okay, well, I took care of my duties running the guess this movie stills thread in the lounge, talked about the boob censorship tyranny, watched neither fight and took a nap. Boy, I'm a winner at life. :good
