why do fighters like refering to themselves in the 3rd person.my all time fave nigel benn was one of the worst protagonists.
jon murray on ringside "i'm in the jon murray business, not the kevin mitchell business".
froch, hatton, khan etc. are all guilty, try not to do it fellas.

Probably because boxing is a business... and when you have a business you need something to sell... in this case it's themselves... to the boxing fans of course.

It can be irritating though, I know.

After a loss its a way distancing mentally from the performance.

    ie.

After a win you'll hear "I felt great in there tonight" while after a loss you'll get "Thats wasn't the real Lennox Lewis in there tonight"

I think it has a lot to do with the mental side of things you want to build up your own mystique to yourself almost. Speaking about yourself in 3rd person makes you some sort of higher being

I find it just as irritating when fighters refer to other fighters as "kid" Murray done it the other day an the guy he was talkin about was about 30. "yeah he's a good kid"

I heard Paul Mc Closkey at it on TV this week. It vexed me!

It's an even more irratating grammatical trait than the footballer's tense

'the winger has crossed a lovely ball & I've nodded it in at the back post'

    Drives me to distraction
