Steve Bunce's documentary on Kirkland Laing is worth a watch. Laing said that he never really wanted to turn pro his only boxing ambition was to go to the Olympics and win a gold medal like his sporting hero Cassius Clay (Ali) to box and represent Great Britain. Laing if I recall correctly was the youngest ABA champion at 17 years old and he said they told him he wasn't old enough to box for Great Britain he said after that he didn't ever take boxing really seriously again and just turned pro to make a bit of money.

My understanding is that Beau Jack did quite well shining shoes and liked meeting people that way, and they tipped him well. I never heard that he was in dire financial straits. As a matter of fact, a friend who was working on a book about him told me he was pretty well off.

    Hi Buddy.
So, from what I have read Beau Jack ( Sidney Walker ) took up the occupation of shoe shining not once but twice in his lifetime, firstly when a very young boy in Augusta, prior to engaging in the infamous " Battle Royals " in which he had some amount of success, then again long after his career was over he returned to shining shoes, with his earnings he invested in a drive-in- BAR b Q stand, a small farm, and occasionally refereed wrestling matches, at some point he was bereft of all his supporting works, and with little or no savings once again sought out his old job, this time exclusively at the Fountainbleu hotel in Miami Florida, which was apparently Mafia owned.
You are right he did indeed enjoy the work " I have been to the top of the mountain, I was champion of the world, worked hard all my life, and I enjoy what I am doing " there you have it, make of his story, what you will.
    stay safe KK, chat soon.

He sounds like a guy who makes the best of whatever situation he finds himself in. Which is a good mindset to have.
