Come back when it sells out 60,000 all seater arenas with a fighter as a 1.2 betting favorite. Neither american fighting in america. But, mma is not wrestling. Boy do these guise twist the truth.
I'm sorry...what? The UFC has broken the North America record for pay per view sales in each of the past three years. Last year they had an unprecedented eight shows in a row above 500,000. In March UFC 111 beat Pacquiao-Clottley and Wrestlemania. Lesnar became the first man since Tyson to do more than one million+ buy show in a single year. The UFC is indeed largely based in America but the organisation has run successful shows in the UK, Australia, Canada (where its huge actually) and is about to make its return to Brazil and its debut in Sweden. And ticket sales is laughable. With the exception of Pacquiao and Maywather events, the small crowds that American boxing events are fought in front of is quite frankly embrassing. And that would be true even if the UFC wasn't routinely drawing five-figure crowds.
Er...when has boxing done that? If that's a reference to Pacquiao-Clottley then you're mistaken - the figures TR filed with Texas was a crowd attendance of around 40,000. Similar for the Margo fight as well.
You do realise UFC only has ppv events? The rest is mma fights. You can not just use ppv sales against non ppv boxing events. Because boxing ppv events **** ufc ppv events constantly and ufc has never outsold a boxing event in the last 10 years. (floyd dlh) Whats wrestlemania got to do with anything?? Superbowl gets more numbers than that show ffs. brb gonna use boxing highest gate tickets against a mma event in europe and use that to get my point across :hi:
The UFC does not just have ppv events. The UFC has events on basic cable (Ultimate Fight Night and UFC on Versus) as well in the staes plus the majority of pay per views several prelim fights are show on a basic cable preview show. And with its recent purchase of Strikeforce, it now has events on Showtime as well. UFC had the single biggest ppv of 2009 (Lesnar-Mir) and Lesnar-Carwin was very close to Mayweather-Mosley. And the point is surely overall revenue which the UFC is easily able to beat boxing in because the UFC is able to create more than just two stars capable of drawing on PPV. Wrestlemania is on PPV. That's the point of the comparison. I have no idea what your last point is referring to. If you want an argument about boxing being bigger than mma in Europe then you're looking at the wrong guy - of course it is, although people exaggerate how successful the sport is over here. But in America the UFC is dominant to a quite remarkable degree.
boxing will never decline or die as it ingrained in some countries around the world,ie Mexico,USA,UK,Argentina,Russia etc.generations continue following boxing or know of it as its passed down generations.also legends like Tyson Ali prince naz were all easily recognized by the man in the street, nowadays boxing is not getting the mainstream coverage it truly deserves, the shift to ppv has serious repercussions for the sweet science,as does ufc, wwe ,mma. they are winning new young fans, the ones boxing needs.also too many titles too many champs, even a die hard boxing nut may not know who is the current flyweight champ for instance,it should revert to one division one champ...we can always dream!!.finely a return of boxing to the school curriculum of the uk,wiil bring a future generations ti the sport in droves,it will also teach kids discipline, and all the other positive attributes of the noble art .
From what ive heard its already in decline.I never for a minute thought it was a threat to boxing. Boxing has its problems but its pretty healthy at the minute especially in Europe.I do think the spate of catchweight fights is harming the sport though. Some of the bouts are good to watch and make sense money wise but you can end up with a champ who has never fought at the weight he is supposed to be No.1 at.This for me just confuses things for people who are just getting into the sport and could put people off.
great stuff so far guys, thanks a lot. What about when Mayweather(officially) & Pacquiao retire? I know they only fight twice a year, well once every 1/2 years for floyd. But when they do they both pull in 1m+ PPV sales. A question in my survey asks respondents to identify who they've heard of from the ring top 10 p4p list. So far all but 1 know pac, all know floyd, most know wlad klitschko, after that it's slim pickings. To be fair they prob know pac & floyd cos they fought hatton, and wlad cos he's fighting haye, or they think he's vitali. Can you see any1 coming up who will match their celebrity? I personally don't. but they said the same about De La Hoya, then Mayweather & Pacquiao broke through. Any other random thoughts? You think boxing has settled at a level it's comfortable and sustainable at, hardcore followers with casuals who will PPV the big fights? Or could it's popularity spike or fall in the next few years/decade? I think if sky backed boxing in the way setanta did it could become more mainstream again. Although in saying that, setanta did go bust...
