Not too familiar with novels, but there are a couple Twilight Zone episodes that deal with boxing. Steel starring Lee Marvin and A Big Tall Wish with Ivan Dixon. Rod Serling was a big boxing fan and boxed when he was in the army during World War 2 in the south pacific.
Thats awsome. Thank you so much. Ive been trying off and on to figure out what this story was for years. My ex girlfriends dad lent it to me in college when I was boxing and I lost it. Ive never been able to figure out which story it was.
There's also a great boxing episode of Night Gallery, Serling's tv series from 1970-73, called The Ring With the Red Velvet Ropes. Check it out.

Once, sometime ago, I bought a book looking to improve my knowledge of Theagenes. I thought to myself " How the hell did an author fill an entire book with information on Theaganes?" bought it, went home, read a bit, and discovered I'd bought a fiction book. That's the only real book I ever picked up, well 'real' fiction boxing book anyway. Outside of that, Ali-Supe is a good comic. I know in recent years it's kinda become a trend, but if you've never seen the panels of Ali whoopin the Man of Steel you might wanna. Put a smile on my face. The Original Johnson!! Kind of a mix between fiction and none. I guess quite a lot like my Theo book. Real people and what not, some real events too, all the majors, and then some creative license, but if your a JJ fan and like some art too, check out this graphic novel it is tits. Not for easily offended white people, but it's a comic book if your offended that's kind of on you. This don't really fit, but, LaStarza played a bad guy in the Batman TV show. He was one of the Mad Hatter's hench, Cappy. Got KO'd by The Bat.....ever since then I got this mental image of Marciano as Batman. When Tyson Fury did it, that just killed me.
The original Twilight Zone is my all time favorite show. In The Big Tall Wish episode, Serling wanted the role of the over the hill boxer Bolie Jackson to go to Archie Moore. Unfortunately Moore was unavailable, so it went to Ivan Dixon.
The Pro is very near and dear to me. The Memphis Kid, though, Mac, isn't based on Burley or Williams. I mean, he could very well be a collage of several different guys (including them) whose aspects or circumstances Heinz amalgamated into a single character, but most directly he's based on the real life Alabama Kid aka Clarence Reeves.
Aye I didn't me it was literally Burley or Williams more like that archetype. But I didn't know he was based on a real fighter, that's fascinating, how do you know that?
